mid to late oct.? I'd say 2, maybe weeks, the hairs have begun to brown and doesn't seem to be a lot of new growth on the buds. 1st week of oct. But that'sjust my opinion.

pistil color is not an indication of ripeness. pistils can turn color overnight. the only way to tell if a plant is ready is by the trichs. even then, when to harvest is a personal preference.

i'm not sure what you mean by "bud growth". they might not grow longer but they will continue to swell. the females continue to put on the flowers as they desperately attempt to catch some male pollen.

the more milky the trichs the more cerebral and uppity the high, the more amber the more couch locked stoned. granted this is only as much as the specific strain will allow. also, don't let them go too long as THC starts to break down quickly if you do even though the buds will put on a good bit of weight.

good growing!

you are welcome.

they will have to go to mostly amber+ before the THC starts to degrade. it's not uncommon for commercial growers to let them go too long because, like i said, they put on a good bit of weight for the "final push".

so unless you plan on letting them go past 50% amber then you don't have anything to worry about here.

as far as when to cut, see my above post. get a jewelers loupe or a little hand held microscope. you can find one at radioshack for ~$13. the trichs are the only sure-fire way to tell when to harvest.

it's a possibility that you can get bud rot. if it's possible you can cover your plants with trash bags or something. if not, you can always chop. again, it's up to you.

another question..

after i cut it

would it be better to hang the whole plant upside down
or individual branches?

I'm quite aware of harvesting by trich color, thanks for the info, tho. By new growth, I meant new pistils. The last few weeks would be for the swelling you speak of, and yes, you can tell by the hairs as a general referance. You don't need to be Bill Nye the science guy to know when to harvest cannabis. By the time the hairs are 50/50 white/brown and the swelling stops your trichomes will be milky with a few ambers anyway. I'll skip the loupe and go with experience. Peace.

the trich info wasn't meant for you it was meant for jojo whatever his name is.
no one said you need to be bill nye to know when to harvest. he doesn't have experience, so i'm telling him the proper way to do it.

the buds will swell for the last 60% of their time in flowering. then before the plant gets ready to die it will put on a good more bit of weight.

you give him an opinion and you don't back it up with anything. every plant is gonna be different. it also depends on type of lighting etc. they will take longer to finish under CFLs as opposed to HIDs. so while your opinion is great and works for you why not teach him how to do it until he gains that experience.

in no way was i trying to preach to you or at you. sorry for not being more clear.

again, personal preference. try out both ways and see what works for you. it's kind of like debating 18/6 vs. 24/0.

Hey shake thanks for the info you really are a helpful guy around here. I didn't know about the buds still swelling even though it's chop time, and I'm a professional cannabis reader;) I'll keep an eye out for that now. O man how bad do I wanna ask how long mine are gonna take but yea I know get out the loop.

I felt I need to explain my point of view as you did quote my reply and refer to it. I back my opinion up with experience and book knowledge, but experience is much more valuable. There is no completely correct way of timing harvest, it's mainly up to opinion. So, my opinion is 2 to 3 weeks. And I like to dry my buds by hanging the whole plant. The buds will keep drawing moisture from the rest of the plant, taking longer to dry, but more chloryphyll will break down and make the buds easier on the lungs. Cutting them into branches is easier to fit into bags if your plants are not near your house, though.

i understand 86. again, my bad. and i wasn't familiar with the general guidelines of going by the pistils. thanks for the info!
