Hi all, my friend and I are having a talk about these new 90 watt 90W WATT LED UFO GROW LIGHT claims the Wavelength: Red light 620-660nm; Blue light: 440-470nm; Warm white 4,500 Kelvin
These lights are so chhep and cost nothing to apy for hydro.
My question is, how come not every grower is using them??
I currently have 1000 and 600 and 400 running and pay about $500 per month in hydro for 8 lights total.
Are these lights worth the cost of the change over???
Thanks.

why not ? well, in my case, while I have been shown photos of real nice, small 'sea of green' buds, etc., I still have never seen a bushy, high-yielding indoor plant with LEDs ... but, I will buy one, if I see the results I want :smokin:

Hello scrocks,
I have used LEDs for a couple of years now, one of the biggest problems are the exagerated claims of most LED sellers. While the UFO style LEDs are getting cheaper they really don't come close to the claims they make and many people get real disappointed in them real fast. Plus they are real crap chinese mfg.
Even good LED lights, like Procyon and TI Pro-Blooms, lack the penatration of HID lights. Like ImageReaper pointed out, great results if you grow SOG (2' or less) but you'll never do a 4' plant without resorting to side lighting.

oldmac knows his LED stuff, too  ... in fact, I think it was his 'sea of green' grow, that impressed me ... regardless, LED is definitely the coming thing, especially with electricity rates likely to skyrocket ... :(

Whats up sccrocks...
Ive just recently switched over to LEDs and am lovin them. I was worried at first but after following a thread on here i finally bought one.
I mainly switched to LED to solve my heat issues. I had to tap into my homes AC duct for my closet and had to have my ac on a little bit more than normal to have my temps in a good range. Now with the LED I dont need the AC and I was able to cut down a few of my fans in the closet. I even took my digital temperature thing out of the closet...dont need to constantly check temps anymore. Plus they are so much more energy efficient.
For my situation LEDs are king. For you maybe not. It all depends on your needs.
Also I recently read an article in High Times about the 90w UFO and they did a side by side grow vs. a 400w hps and to their surprise the 90w UFO outgrew and outflowered the HPS. They also named the supernova LED ufo gear of the year or some crap... dont remember the exact details as I was pretty baked.
But for sure most resellers out there claim outrageous shit so that you will buy their LEDs. So shop around and do some research to find the right wattage LED panels for your grow.
I think within a few years we will see more and more people switching to LED from HID once the LED grow technology matures and progresses with better diodes and what not.

sorry, but I don't believe much of ANYTHING that is touted in 'High Times', especially their phonyass cannabis cups :wtf: ... they are all about rewarding their heavy advertisers, (just like lots of magazines do) ... read it, enjoy it, but, with healthy skepticism ... :smokin:

hi guys
ive a friend who knows a thing or two about led lights and he was telling me that untill the proper colour of diode can be made they will never be up where a hps is in terms of depth of growth and flower thickness!

Thanks to one and all for the info. I think i am going to stick with my current system. Right now I am growing for 5 clients and have total license for 186 plants. We are running 6 /1000 w and 3/ 600 and 4 /400 and our light bill is average past 6 months around $700.00 per month. Shit last crop only got 26.5 grams per plant, so lose money, so no can do if you know what I mean.
In spite of the fact we are a compassion club we still need to make enough to pay our costs.
I am going to start a grow Journal for the newest endevour, gonna try airo this time with 50 plants. Have rooms set up ready for clones.
Again thanks the input.

IMHO your friend is wrong. We already have diodes in the correct colour wavelenghts, and even had them back many years ago with 5mm diodes. The problem is getting enough photon flux energy from them. Mostly we are at 2 watt diodes, tho LedEngine (and other companies) have some 5w and even 15w ones. The next generation of hi power LEDs are on the way.
There are many advances taking place in the general light market place as municapalities and companies are headed to switch street lights and such to LEDs. That technology will filter down to us for horticultural use, but it will take time, since we are just a niche market.:)

Led do not begin to come close to hid if so everyone would use them and the ufo is junk the only one that does even a little is the procyon and what about all these $2,000 LED lights in the mags? im sure maybe in years to come they will get there but i would not waste the money and just do what you know will work till things get to that point. If you are some young kid that geeks off of a plant with any bud then led will be good but for someone who cant waste expensive nutes on a crap amout of nothing they need to stick to the real deal

Not everyone can grow using HID because of space or ventilation issues... that doesnt make them "geek off" to smaller plants...

Lose the attitude man. I cant use hid either bc of my temps. Im using LED and CFLs. Its just a small grow and I cant ventalate myplace more than it is now. Peace :rastasmoke:

I have just made the decision to go led since my grow space is pretty small and heat is SUCH and issue. The light are arriving tomorrow, 180w ProSource UFO, and 2 45w panels, so I hope to have my room completely converted by the weekend.
Quick question, how close do you keep your 90w UFO to the top of the canopy? I've only grown w hps before and I've never brought the lights closer than 18". -DF:jointsmile:

I don't post all that often, but I can tell you that LEDs do work. I had my light made to my specs by someone in China. Yes, China.
They do not penetrate like HPS does, so I train my plants with LST. I have four foot high plants that are 12 days into flower and doing WONDERFUL! I let the plants grow without any training until the last few days before I went to 12/12. Even now I am still moving branches and helping the sites to the top. A few twisty ties here and there and I have a very nice and even canopy!
Now, my plants aren't scraggly either. VERY bushy. I do take care of them though. I pull out all of the leaves that fall off as I brush my hand underneath. Yesterday I cut off the two very bottom branches on the plants as they couldn't grow fast enough to get up to the light with the rest.
I didn't top and/or fim. I just tied the main stem down about eight inches from the top. Being careful the stem didn't break and my main colas are now dead even with the rest of the sites.
I'm also doing this all in soil. I had much faster and robust growth with hydro. Anyone doubting LED's should search Weezard. He posted a pic of his indoor plant (grown under LED) out-performing his outdoor plant.
Just because it's never been done before doesn't mean it can't be. It just take a little of this :weedpoke:.
If you have the patience and a little engineer's curiosity you will find LED will do what you want.

Sorry for thread jack, but I'm in a little pickle. My grow space is 2x5x5 and I have a choice between a 150W HPS or a 100W LED grow bar.
The specs on the grow bar are as follows:
R: Wide range from 620-730nm
B: 450-470nm
X: Supposed "special" color
Supposed to replace a 500W HPS, but in my mind that is doubtful. Obviously 150W puts out 16,000 lumen. So with that being said. Which one is a better pick for my situation?
Oh, and I do plan on training them ScrOG.

Scrog is great with leds!
But I'd have to see the site for that "led bar" before I could even guess.
I can tell you from experience with both, that a 90W UFO will outdo the 150W Hps.
And the 180W. UFO model looks very promising, but I have not played with one, yet.
That help?
Aloha.

Yeah, they had a UFO one, but the bar seemed more suitable for my space, considering it's more wide than long. I will include a picture in my other thread here (http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-lighting/175664-150w-hps-100w-led-grow-bar.html).
Appreciate the help my friend.

here is my led grow. i used a 90w ufo tri-ban from start to 5 weeks into flowering. then got a 180w and used it for the rest of the grow. i also have been growing in 95-100F temps my plants whole life. then they got attacked by some spider mites, i think i killed all of them? but anyways these sativa donamint strains have been threw hell. put here some pics of my led grow.
