I just read somewhere that five minutes "hula hooping" will really help work off those calories. Anyone here tried these or the "exercise hoops" I saw for sale? Does it work or not as far good exercise?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. :)

Happy Holidays ALL! :madnoel: :madnoel::madnoel:

Step 1: Put shoes on.
Step 2: Go outside.
Step 3: Start running.
Step 4: Continue running for an extended period of time.
Step 5: Don't waste money on hula hoops.

LMFAO on "step 5"
It is true though, don't buy stupid stuff to loose weight. Don't eat fast food, don't do sit ups (they don't burn fat), and follow JohnnyZ's guide

I suppose you say buying a jump rope is a waste of money too......

Hula-hoops if you do it for an extended period of time will increase strength in your hip flexors and abs. It is exercise.

NOTHING will burn off calories faster than SEX (unless it's done with me, I'm pretty lethargic , even during that) ... :S2:

Me too!
So.

Allow me to submit Wee Zard's 5 point plan.

1. Borrow brightly colored hula hoop.
2. Put shoes on.
3. Go outside. (bring dogs)
4. Place hoop, and begin to run. (Try to hula while running.)
5. Any self respecting dog will then promptly drag your embarassing ass back inside where you both can pig out on tasteless, 1 calorie puffed rice cakes and puppy love.:D

Cereally! Give yerself a break.
Every body has a blueprint in it's genes.
There's a size and shape that is "normal" for each particular body.
Constantly fighting one's genetic building plan can't be good for you, physically, or emotionally.

Chowing down on real food.
Home-grown, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and getting a resonable amount of exercise will let your body, do it's thing.
Whatever that may be.
Then, it's about acceptance, ya?:)

Walking and swimming are prolly the most balanced and productive exercise for staying healthy.
And if you just don't feel like it, some times, then don't.
I'm willin' to bet that Mr. Hound, and your critters, love you "warts and all.":)

Geeze Weedy! You seem to bring out the "Dutch Uncle" in me.

Never mind.

Well sex I do like lol, just not running.

Weeze....seriously, I haven't felt this good in years. I've been hiking a mile a day with one of the shepherds quite simply BECAUSE I CAN!!! I was only off the ciggies for about six months before the cancer started growing (a guess from my cancer doc) but winter is here and it is supposed to snow this weekend. I have NO intention of giving up my newfound energy and easy breathing whiling away during winter.....we FULLY intend to be ready for next sumer's rafting. :D

So I needed something that would work indoors during bad weather and I wasn't kidding about hating running......or anything that actually even SMELLS like true exercise. The hula hoop manages to avoid having the "appearance" of exercise and I used to be pretty darn good as a kid even if do say so myself. :D

I just read somewhere that five minutes "hula hooping" will really help work off those calories.

Nothing done for five minutes burns off many calories, including sex!

I would change to Step 4: Continue [exercise] for an extended period of time.

Gotcha.....do the crime, gotta put in the time. :D Still easier for me to hula hoop than attempt.....say.....100 runs around the pool table in the middle of winter.

Thanks you guys for all the answers. :)

You seem a lot less motivated than I thought. If you lack the get up and go to get up and go, I suggest signing up for a class like yoga or basic martial arts, whatever strikes your fancy, with a friend.

I find going to the gym with a friend always manages to fit itself into my schedule, cause no one wants to be the one to bitch out.

I'm afraid you have me pinned fairly well John.....but include the fact that I just one week ago finished chemotherapy for cancer so I will completely agree that I do indeed lack your motivation. I'm really looking for something simple that I can pretend isn't REALLY exercise just to get back into shape and lose the flabby body fat I turned to during chemo. I definitely don't have "what it takes" to run or go to a gym or something......that's for the true dedicated types like you and Linear.

Thanks for stopping by the thread.

Wow deepest apologies dude, I had no idea you were a chemo patient. I dunno if they have a Re-Fit centre around your area, but where I live there's a gym dedicated for those who are recovering from a serious illness. You have your own personal trainer and everything, that might be a good way to get back in the swing of things.

Or you can look at yourself and say, I've beat cancer, why can't I conquer exercise? I'm not trying to poke fun at all dude. All I'm saying is that if you can beat fucking cancer, going for a run should be comparatively easy :).

Dude, I've got an NASM cert in personal training....

Will a hula hoop be benneficial to your health? Well it's better than sitting on the couch committing genocide on doritos.... but it's not a viable way to exercise, you may be sore the first day, but that's only due to lactic acid buildup from using your muscles in a way in which they're not accustomed to.

Weightloss is literally a conservation of mass equation.... Calories in < Calories out = weight loss...

It's a simple equation.

Oh, and overall lifting weights burns far more calories, because it rases your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) permanently, so you're always burning more calories through the day, where as running in some instances can cause you to hold onto calories. Not saying running is bad at all, go fucking run, but a well rounded workout routine is best.

Try running on an off day, or go for a nice walk, and then hit up the weights a half hour 3 times a day doing a full body routine, not some fucking arm curls.

Try

Squats
Deadlifts
Bench
Rows
Push Ups
Pull Ups
Millitary Press.

You should have a workout done in a half hour.

I don't mean to be rude but......I knew I should have put this in the womens forum.

Max, thanks for all the input....thats a long, informative post but I'm afraid all you MEN out there are completely missing the question.....which was.....how about a hula hoop for exercise.....yay or nay? Amongst everything else I actually did get the shift that you guys thinks it's for wussies.....which I am so that sounds about right

Since I finished chemo a week ago I have about half the red and white blood cells of a normal person and no platelets. That means no strength, no immunity to infection, and no ability to clot my blood. Things like running, weight lifting, squats etc.....are not even mentioned in my post for a very good reason......not only are they things I absolutely should NOT be doing; they're things I HATE doing and simply won't do. Period.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. Here is the question. Has anyone hear tried using a hula hoop to assist with burning off some calories? And did it help or not?

Thanks in advance.

Weedy I think if you feel like hula hooping at all, you are ahead of the game.

Personally, I am amazed you feel good enough to attempt hula hooping.

I haven't done any hula hooping since 72 or so, but from what I remember it was pretty strenuous exercise. It should help you a lot. Don't overdo anything right now, you are too important to everyone!

Lots of love, Lola

And Max.....I know you're completely right about the calories in/calories out.....many more go in at my house than out. That's definitely part of the issue.

But during winter I want something I can do inside that's fairly fun. It' doesn't have to be a fierce calorie burner.....just some exercise and some fun. :D

It's gotta be good for about all areas of the body and when you become fast cardio would be obtained. Dancing keeps one fit and it is like dancing in a way.

BTW, May I have the next dance Miss Weedhound? ;)

Go golfing, DO NOT buy a golf cart...walk the course on a nice day and just enjoy your game. I have gotten pretty tired from a long day of golf believe it or not. Its a good hobby, and is FUN, and most importantly it is not that intense of a sport so you should be fine. I'm sorry to hear about your cancer man, thats so terrible. BUT on the bright side, you have fought and won and are even willing to exercise right afterwards so you are doing excellent man . Either get that or try the WII fit :rastasmoke:.

Dear Ms., (female,) lady, Weedhound.:D

You asked.

Is a hula hoop good exercise?

Not usually, but it depends on time and ferocity, ya?

To feel exercised without stress, I've used one of those 3' diameter mini-trampolines.

Gets yer lymphatic fluids movin' and makes ya feel mo' betta.
Prolly won't shed any pounds but Inokea, it's almost as much fun as jumping on da bed.

It's also fun to crank up the rock-n-roll and dance yer ass off.
Hoop or no hoop.

Side question.
Did they offer you Hematocrit and/or Iron supplements?

Aloha nui loa.

I understand the whole weakness thing with the Chemo.....

You can do bodyweight squats and all of those other exercises.

Working with your own body weight is the safest way to exercise, try doing some push ups, if you cannot do a regular one, go on your knees and do as many as you can, then work your way up to a regular push up.

For another exercise that you can do safely at home that's not too strenuous on your body, try going down into a squatting position, and lift something that you feel you can safely and not too strenuously over your head, and stand up, keeping your back straight, this will work much of your core musculature and also your back, shoulders and legs.

You can start at a pace that's right for you, and it's safe and easy. When you're watching tv or folding laundry, during a commercial take the basket above your head and do some squats.

Lifting things doesn't mean you've gotta be macho, it's just good for you to do anyways.

PM me for more ideas, because I've got experience helping other people in situations such as yourself. I had to help a friend of mine who was morbidly obese to the point where he couldn't move properly, with my diet and workout advice he safely lost a lot of weight, he's still overweight but doing much better last I'd checked.

Now for the reality check portion of this. The women in videos, or in magazines bust their ass for their bodies, they lift heavy weights and don't fuck around with the little pink ones. They're genetically gifted, but they also bust their ass. I have a feeling asking for workout advice in the women's section would bring you a lot of advice using the word "tone".

Of course muscle "tone" is the residual tension your muscles maintain constantly, it's genetic and cannot be helped. In their relaxed state your muscles retain tension so if put under sudden stress they're not damaged.

Specifying everything about your situation better helps me come up with ideas to help you improve your physical fitness and health.

Weedhound, one of my wife's physical therapists while she was doing rehab for her back told her doing the hula hoop is excellent for strengthening core muscles. Probably wouldn't count as aerobic exercise or weight training, but to strengthen up those core muscles that support your spine and abdomen, the PT said it was a good tool. I never could keep one of the things up, but you ladies have a shape and a waist that can. Mighty glad you're on this side of your chemo. Hope you get your strength back fast.

This is more of an aside to Image Reaper's comment about sex burning calories. Maybe I'm just strange, but watching a pretty lady do the hula hoop is a good form of foreplay.

Hmmm....Weedy you may have started a trend here. Now that we know guys like to watch us Hula Hoop, it won't be long till the girls get off the pole and start hooping. :)

I can see it sweeping the strip clubs of the nation. The latest craze. Naked hula hoopers.:)

But I did answer and it's exercise. :) For the healthy, it's perhaps nothing but it does burn some calories and it'd burn it aerobically. After chemo, anything kind of movement is beneficial towards losing weight. Start with doing it for 10 minutes, put on some of your favorite tunes and you'll have your share of exercise. Don't listen to the people who say "hula-hoop isn't exercise."

I especially know about your situation with chemo since I went through it myself. I suppose you got a bit of weight gain you wish to burn off? Start with the hula-hoop and take it easy, push yourself at a little, but not too hard, your body has to re-adjust.

I also suggest you look at pilates, do some light stretching. It'll help you feel better and open up your body. I'm sure some of those muscles are tightened. Just do what you can.

Wow I never expected such an outpouring of support from everyone!! You guys are so great...what a crowd here!! Thanks so much everyone for such great thoughts and suggestions.

I'm not aiming for "model" thinness, believe me. It's just that I'd love to drop about 15 lbs that are more health oriented than sexy (hard to feel sexy when you're as bald as I am these days LOL!). I want my shot at being fit and a non-smoker!! Yeehaw! :D

And Dave, I'm very happy to be on this side of chemo myself. Hope BG is doing well. :)

Bird sends her love. Don't see much of her these days. She's doing two rotations at once. She says to tell you bald is sexy. She's always threatening to shave her own head just for convenience.

That Pilates suggestion is another good one. That's another one she got into during back rehab. Builds strength and helps you tone and lengthen those muscles. It's supposed to be good for golfers, but I don't know any guys who do it around here.
