View Full Version : My first grow. Real McCoy and Jack Herer

Alright guys i'm new to indoor growing, i've always done outdoor until now. My plants got taken this year and i'm fed up so i'm going indoor!
I am growing Jack Herer and Real McCoy. I have 1 Jack plant and 2 Real McCoy.
The light I am currently using makes me nervous. I'm not even a 100% sure what it is at this point ( I know it sounds bad but I got it from a friend and its working for now.) I will be ordering a 250 HPS and putting a Metal Halide conversion bulb in it for veg. Should have the new light in a week in a half or so.
I am using a pro mix of soil that contains peat moss, periite, and vermiculite. I am using a fertilizer called Ionic, the guy at the hydro store recommended it to me for growing in soil.
I'll post a picture of the plants so far and the light i'm using right now. Any input would be great and i would appreciate it very much.
I couldn't get a full picture of the light because its to big of a file. Its about 10 inches long or so total.

Hey,nice to see ya tdaddy!!!If ya get a chance ,what are the NPK numbers on that Ionic...

NPK is 2-1-2. I ordered my new light and it should be here sometime early next week. Plants are finally starting to take off nicely. I think the light I have right now is just not very powerful so it took a bit longer to get going.
Ionic for Soil and Coco - Growth Technology (http://www.growthtechnology.com/nute-ionic-soil-coco.asp)
That seems to be the same stuff except mine says for soil/coco

One plant per pot. The roots will get tangled up...then you can't transplant...:(

I agree with dutch,tdaddy...One per pot will let you transplant smoothly and also let you treat each plant as an individual nute wise...:stoned::smokin:

well. I have grown 3 plants in one 20 gallon bucket befor. and it worked they all ended up being female. then I flowered them when they were 1 foot tall.
also I tied them down while in veg cycle and they grew a lot of bud tops.
they grew and flowered under 9 25 watt cfl lights and I got one 0z off each plant.
well that was how my experience with 3 plans in 20 gallons of soil went.:D:thumbsup:

Yeah its about a 25 gallon tub, soil goes down about 11 inches. I wish i would have individually planted them.
Is it to late late to try and transplant at this point? I have a feeling the roots might be fairly large by now, they were coming out of my rock-well cubes before i even put them in soil. They only reason i did it like that was because a good friend of mine who grows indoors does it that same way, (his tub is a bit larger and he does 4 plants per tub).
I am ordering a 2ft x 4ft x 7ft tent this week and the plants will be moved there in about 2 and half weeks when it arrives. What do you gentlemen suggest i do?
Thanks for all the help this is my first time doing indoors and i expected a few mistakes.

Is it to late to transplant now???NO WAY!!!It's a blessing your light didn't come yet...Root connection if any will be minimal...Sticking something into the medium to keep em' separated would be O.K...I've never had to deal with this but I'd say thin wood or roofing shingles would keep em' boxed...However,if it was my grow,I'd get em' out of there as gentle as possible and transplant them into basically the same type of dirt separately...:stoned::smokin:

Alright i'm going to go and check out some things and the store. I'm probably going to buy some pots and just transplant them in to some medium sized ones for now. Any ideas on the best way to go about the transplant?
trickdaddy450
11-08-2008, 09:42 PM
Alright i've decided to just try and make it work. I know its probably not the best idea but i'm going to just grow them to a bit over a foot or so and them start the budding cycle and see how it works out. I'm going to be ordering some seeds and making some upgrades 4 the next grow, but i'm just going to keep my fingers crossed on this one and hopefully it works out. Bear with me on this one guys!

A big spoon,a spatula, and TLC...Always try to transplant into round pots where the top is larger than the bottom, except for when the transplanting is done and your ready to flower...Watering or feeding the day before makes for an easier transplant... You'll be able to roll the pot in your hands to release side growth, turn it over with stem between your fingers supporting stem and dirt for a stressless transplant...:stoned::smokin:

I'm just going to try and make it work how it is right now and hope for the best. I went over to menards and they didnt have any pots because of the changing season, and i'm not very confident about transplanting them out of that 25 gallon tub. All I can do is hope for the best and if this time around it doesn't work out i'll make sure to make the appropriate changes for the next grow.
What seedbank do you prefer?? I'm not going to order for another month or two but i wanted to start looking around.
THANKS!!!!:rasta:

This leaf seams to be having trouble. All of the other leaves are just fine, but this one has been growing very awkward from the start. Should I leave it alone and see what it does or what ?

Don't be afraid to prune a mutant leaf,(that leaf stem looks skinny)or any lower growth thats in the way or touching dirt,etc...What you take off the bottom will give more energy to the top...Use sharp scissors and prune as close to the stem as you can without touching it...Start studying nutes and soil additives like worm castings...Or maybe your an organic tea man...Read as much as you can...

I ordered my grow tent today. 2x4x7. It should be here hopefully by the end of next week. I am also considering ordering a 4inch inline duct fan for the tent and then just have a box fan hanging next to one of the 6inch vents in the tent as an intake (it'll be in a cooler area of my house so it should work great). How does that sound to you guys ?

Looks like they like the new light...What kind of reflector do you have???How're your temps...:)
trickdaddy450
11-15-2008, 09:36 PM
Not quite sure what kind of reflector, I got the light on ebay. Its just a big reflector I don't really know how to describe it. I tried putting the link in here but it wouldn't bring up the page when you clicked it. If you go to ebay and type in 250 watt hps it is the very first one.
Temps are about 75 or so. I keep the heat at like 62, and have the closet door open with my bedroom window open as well, so some of the fresh air drifts into there and my fan sucks it in.
Think they will be ready for 12/12 in a week or so? My tent should be here in a few days as well as my inline fan.
I've been feeding every other watering, and as of recent i'm watering about every 3-5 days depending on how much there drinking.

Cool t-daddy,
You giving any thought about some extra phosphorus after you flip and flowering is established???
PS-When you start flowering be it in a tent or a closet, not one drop of light pollution during "lights off"...:stoned::smokin:
trickdaddy450
11-16-2008, 06:07 PM
Yeah when I do outdoors I always use extra phosphorous during flowering, so I figured it would be the same principal. I am not quite sure what kind of nutrients to use indoors though. They have the Ionic blooming stuff at the hydro store here in town, but do you have any suggestions? I'm going to wait about a week and half or so from today then start flowering probably give or take a few days. That new light has made a great difference it seems like. Hopefully everything continues to work out okay. Thanks for all the help!!!!!

When I mix my grow medium for flowering I doctor it up with bat guano, seabird guano, and bone meal for extra phosphorus...There are a zillion products for flowering...I'm sure you'll find something you like in the hydro store...Surf the online growshops to get an idea of whay you're lookin' for...:stoned::smokin:

Cool I have some bat guano from my outdoor this past year. I think i'll just go into the hydro store and possibly use the Ionic for blooming i remember reading it when i was there last time but can't quite remember the info. I know it had a low NPK. I'll figure it out. I'll put some pics up later in the week!

It is scheduled to arrive here tomorrow. It came all the way from CA to MI so it took about 6 days. I need to find out something to do about the smells though. I have an inline fan for exhaust, but no carbon filter, and my car just broke down so I really can't afford to buy one right now and making one doesn't seem very easy. I've spent a lot on this grow since its my first one and rent is coming up and my car is now having problems so i can't spend much more at all. I need some suggestions on what else I can do besides a carbon filter. A friend of mine just keeps a bucket of Pine Sol outside of this grow area and that eliminates the smell but I don't know how good that would be. The grow area is in a walk in closet that is in my bedroom. I have been keeping a window open during the day to keep it aired out in my room because it reeks, but it is getting very cold out now and I can't keep the window open forever. If the smell gets outside of my bedroom into the rest of the apartment I might have to terminate the grow. Any suggestions would be awesome guys. Thanks

Can't you just get ducting, stick your inline fan in there and shove a big bag of aquarium charcoal in front of the fan to absorb odors? That would only cost 20 bucks or so to engineer. Does that tent have a way to hook up fan ducting? Couldn't you use cheap plastic dryer ducting? Guess it depends on the fan.

LolaGal is on the right track...I searched the site and can't find anything on making a homemade carbon filter.
It involves drilling the shit out of a five gallon bucket with a small drill bit...I'm talking about alot of holes...A thick filter material is placed around the inside of the bucket...The bucket is then filled with activated carbon...Since you're using a 4'' inline fan,you then want to cut a 4" hole on a bucket cover...Now you just need to buy a 4" flange(about $10) and caulk it to the bucket cover...Connect your four inch duct hose to the fan and run it to the filter flange...
Don't quote me on the above as I've never made one but it's made something like that...Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in...:stoned:

Yeah I mean I would love to purchase a carbon scrubber right now but its just not possible. I will be buying one in the future for the next grow just not now. I'll try what Lolagal suggests and see how it works i'll let you guys no! Thanks. I got a little tuned up on friday night and left the camera over at a friends thats why no pics lately. What is your humidity levels? IMO 85+ is pushing it hot. Have ya'll got readings on both inside those tents? I would imagine that the humidty is high in the tents...am i correct?

11-21-2008, 07:48 PM
I am not sure how the humidity is in my tent. Temps are around 70. I have the CFM fan for exhaust and a box fan sucking in and circulating. I keep the heat in my house at about 62, so my tent stay nice and cold. I'm only running 250 watts though.
LolaGal
11-21-2008, 11:13 PM
Tdaddy: I got a real cheap humidity/temperature gauge for like $5 at WallyMart. It keeps track of high and lows also. I was thinking about the fan idea. I would attach appropriate size plastic venting crap from a dryer. Then I would just put a mesh bag full of aquarium charcoal in the vent line. If you put the inline fan downwind of the mesh bag, it would pull the fumes through the charcoal and then vent. Make sure the fan is able to pull adequate air through the mesh bag. I never tried it, but maybe it will be a cheap solution for you. Good luck
;)

Well i'm set for right now I just went to wally world and bought some twist air fresheners and that did the job. I also have a little bowl of pin sol sitting out near the tent and it covers it up really well. I'll look into the temp/humidity meter. Thanks !

Gilster: Since you are new, (LolaGal pats Gilstir's hand) What you're doing is called hijacking a thread! This is a thread TrickDaddy started to get help with HIS grow. Why not start another thread addressing your questions?
But anyway I'll give you my 2 cents.
I would at least put each plant in it's own pot in soil. Try reading and searching usually you can find a thread that answers your questions. Look at Stickies. They have one on grow room set up that should help. have fun.

I would def listen to lola. I should have individually planted my plants one per pot. I have a 250 watt light and a grow tent both of which I bought on ebay. I also purchased a 4inch exhaust fan which was purchased on ebay, it fits right in the flanges of my tent. I have a box fan sucking air in and circulating. My tent is in a dark place because you have to make sure that no light is exposed during flowering. You also need to invest into a timer and some soil. I'm using a mixture of perilite, vermiculite, and peat moss. My plants vegged for 40 days or so, I would have vegged longer but with the 250 watt light I don't want them to get to large, also since i planted them in the same big container I didn't want to veg them to long. So for your list you need
1. A light of your choice
2. Soil
3. Intake and exhaust fan
4. An area which can be completely sealed from light when flowering
5. Your choice of fertilizer would also be recommended.
6. Timer and probably a power strip
I'm not sure if I forgot anything but thats the gist of my setup. Hope it helps!

Yeah as soon as they got in the tent it seemed like the growth was quick. I think I can see pistils on all three plants not 100% sure though. After thanksgiving I will take them out of the tent and see if I can get some close up's.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING GUYS!:rasta:

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone hope you had an awesome one like I did. Here are some updated photos flowered 6 days. I had to trim them up a hair today because they were way to bushy covering each other up. Tell me what you think!

Yeah I really wish I would have potted individually. The only reason I did it like that is because my good friend does 3 per container a bit bigger than that with a 1000 watt light and veges them for like 4 months and then buds them and gets a pound and a half or so out of 2 containers that size ( 6 plants) and he never has any problems, so I figured i'd try it like that. Next time will be different! I just trimmed some of the really big leaves that were covering up some of the undergrowth and growing in the way of the other plants.I just don't want to much to be covered when i'm only using the 250 watt light. I think I might wait until I move and get a place where I pay my own power to do my next grow, so I can upgrade the light. Alright i'm really stoned and feel as if i'm rambling on. Hopefully I hear from you guys soon!!!!:)

EEK!
Don't trim off the big fan leaves bro! They are like solar panels for the plant, creating and storing tons of food for the rest of the plant! I think stinky has even said (not an exact quote) "trimming/cutting fan leaves on a plant is like taking an engine out of car to make it faster and lighter". The point is that it does not help things out. Just tie the leaves back next time.
Hopefully you didn't remove too many. I imagine you'll be fine either way. Plus the 250W HPS should give you plenty of penetration, so I wouldn't be too worried about the big fan leaves.
Other then that things look GREAT!
Keep up the great work man.

Thanks a lot man I did not know that I won't remove anymore. I appreciate the information!!! I think the middle plant might possibly be a male... It looks like there might possibly be tiny balls just starting to form but not for sure it's been 7 days of flowering now. Is it going to hurt them at all if they grow into each other a lot? Thanks for all the help guys.
trickdaddy450
11-29-2008, 07:57 PM
Well the middle plant was a male, so I got rid of it today. The plant on the right is a female, and the plant on the left looks like it might be a male but i'm not sure just yet. So I know that one of the Real McCoy's was male and one female. Hopefully the Jack Herer plant is female, but if not at least i'll have one. I'm going to go pick up some Fox Farm big bloom on monday and start feeding.
trickdaddy450
11-30-2008, 08:26 PM
Alright the remaining two are female so thats some good news!!!! Just a few white hairs starting to pop up near the tops of the plants. I'll pick that fertilizer up tomorrow and start feeding sometime this week.

I wish I had room for clones but I don't! I'm going to be ordering some seeds in a month or so. I think I'm going to get lowryder and try that out for my next grow. Those two plants get bigger everyday it seems and the pistils on the right plant are starting to fill in nicely. I'll keep you guys updated!

Haha yeah I tend to drink a bit much once in awhile and get myself into a bit of trouble. That Black Velvet gets me every time it seems like!
Its weird my plants have some leaves that have 9 leafs. Is that normal? I'm new to indoor and before this I always grew the same strain outdoors every year and it was a 3 leafer (it was an awesome strain very potent). So I was just wondering about this. Thanks in advance !

AHHH!!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!! Not the dread 9-leafer! You better kill it before it crawls out of it's dirt at night and strangles you!:D
I've noticed 5 leafers, 7 leafers, 9's and even 11s. I think it just means they are healthy. We all need a 3 leafer strain, might be confusing to poachers!

Haha yeah it didn't help me much at all this.It was the first year my plants got taken. The day I went to harvest them they were gone, then I went and helped my buddy who gives me the clones every year trim his up and I wanted to cry!!! No idea what strain or anything it is, but i've been growing it every year outdoor for the last 3 years or so and its bomb stuff. I have confidence that my biggest plant would have had 8+ ounces on it. I had them growing right on a bog that had nothing but horse run off water surrounding it. Never had to water all season except for when I was feeding. It was a huge bummer.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Nothing worse than an empty hole in the ground. Take all your males there and plant them this year. Haha good revenge. You know they'll be back at your patch. Maybe that would break them from coming back there.
By the way, anybody know where you can get bear traps online? Haha just kidding.............

Haha yeah I don't know what would be worse going out there and seeing an empty hole, or going out there and having someone trapped trying to steal your plants... haha. It sucks because it's at my parents house and its 10acres barb wire fenced in, so i'm still not sure how they got to them. I know my parents didn't do it, so it was someone who went snooping around because they must have known about them. Oh well hopefully this grow will make up for it.

Make sure you have an oscillating fan between that 250 and the canopy...Remember,without CO2,THC production slowly decreases at temps above 80 degrees, much more noticeably towards 85 degrees...

If you like someone's post you can click on the scales (upper right corner of post) and leave them reputation or rep. You get to post a little comment. Of course if you disagree, you can leave negative rep, but tis considered a low blow. Since nobody can PM, it's a nice way to let people know what you think of grow, etc. See, since you turned yours on, you have 3 bars of rep. Check user CP every now and then to read comments. Have fun.

Yeah check out that Alaskan Ice I found it on the attitude seed bank under feminized seeds. There's no picture but an interesting description check it out if you get a minute. I think its between the Alaskan Ice and Strawberry Haze. I'm going to use whatever stain I order as my outdoor strain this year too, along with some California Big bud clones my buddy is going to have prepared. YUMM.
