Harvesting the top colas first

Ive noticed that the top colas are always ripe first. What is the general consensus on flushing for a week, chopping of the big fat colas, and then letting the rest of the plant keep growing so the harvest is bountiful. any opinions on that technique.

I did that on my last grow. I cut the colas off and let the rest go another two weeks. It didn't seem to help or hurt anything. The plants didn't grow anymore, nor did the trichomes get any more amber. Go figure?

I won't waste my time on that again.
