Well, according to wikipedia, which is usually fairly good w/ nomenclature-

In modern Arabic, the name Barack (Arabic: باراك ) pronounced ba'-rak, means "he who is blessed" or simply "blessed". A more common form in most Arabic-speaking countries is the passive Mubarak.

The usage of the root B-R-K as a male name meaning "blessing" occurs in the Ancient Semitic Sabean (barqac), in Palmyrene (baraq), and in Punic (Barcas, as surname of Hamilcar), and as a Divine name in Assyrian Ramman-Birqu and Gibil-Birqu[1], and personal Biblical name Barukh or Baruch (which is also the modern Hebrew cognate; see Book of Baruch for an instance of the name). "Barack" and "Baruch" are equivalent to "Benedict" (Latin Benedictus).

From the same source-

Sidney or Sydney was originally an English surname. Its main origin is from Old English words meaning "wide well-watered land". [1] It is generally conceded (without enthusiasm) that Sidney may also be a contraction of the French place name Saint-Denis, the Patron Saint of France, which was brought to England by the Normans. Hanks & Hodges point out that there is little evidence to support this derivation and it may be the result of folk etymology [2]. Reaney & Wilson state that "The name is usually derived from St. Denis (Normandy) but proof is lacking". [1]

In (Norman) French, Saint Denis (itself a contraction of Dionysius) would be pronounced something like "S' Deni'", which in England became "Sidney" through the folk etymology process when the Plantagenets became English.

The Dionysus ref is kinda funny.

why did he switch from Barry to Barak?
If his given name was Barack, then as an adult, it stands to reason that he should use it. Nicknames are not always taken into the workplace. If, as a child, it made more sense to go by an Americanized nickname to fit in, I can fully understand that. I know several Korean immigrants who go by American names now for a number of reasons, such as not having to spell their given name every time someone needs to know it, and making it easier to remember.

His middle name follows the translation perfectly

Husayn, Hussein, Hossain, Hussain, Husain, Hosein (Arabic:حسین Turkish: Hüseyin), is an Arabic name which is the diminutive of Hasan, meaning "good" or "handsome".

Barak means "blessed" , and Hussein means "good and handsome" I don't see anything that's wrong with his name.

Why are you occuppying your time analyzing his name?...I'm curious

I could care less about Barack Obama's name. It's not like he got to choose his name from a list when he was born. This is irrelevant news reporting. I'd rather hear about issues at hand.

What I do care about are the issues and type of man I see Obama to be. He is not someone I support. I won't go into here but I've stated my reasons in quite a few threads if anyone is interested as to why.

Why doesn't he just say? Because it's bullshit. What kind of fanatical right-wing crap is this? Do you just find it easier to knock down strawmen than actually argue against the real person and issues?

Of course this is just coming from me, and seeing as I'm not a right-wing extremist who thinks "liberal" is a dirty word, without understanding it's meaning, I must hate America too. I jihad on America! A jihad on unborn babies! A jihad on freedom itself!

Also, I thought Obama was a Christian and wasn't even raised in a Muslim household?

Or is that all lies to you, Bong30?

Obama had muslim influence growing up through his bilogical father and again in Indonesia where he attended both Muslim and Catholic schools. There is no evidence to support that Obama ever was involved with the Islam religion outside attending Muslim schools when he was in Indonesia (Indonesia is an Islam dominant country.)

I don't believe it's lies but rather miscommunication/misunderstanding. I believe Obama has addressed this question once and no one has brought it up since. Probably for good reason. I strongly doubt Obama was ever a muslim.

I can't believe we're talking about a name and a person's religion. Why don't we focus on actual issues important to our nation?

I'm against Obama but surely we can find better ways to prove he's the lesser of the two main party candidates.

Here's some quotes about religion from Barack Hussein Obama. My responses are below each paragraph.

"You need to come to church in the first place precisely because you are first of this world, not apart from it. You need to embrace Christ precisely because you have sins to wash away - because you are human and need an ally in this difficult journey." Barack Obama

I do not "need to come to church" for any reason. I don't believe in your Christ or that I have "sins to wash away". Go fuck yourself, Barack Hussein Obama.

"It was because of these newfound understandings that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street in the Southside of Chicago one day and affirm my Christian faith. It came about as a choice, and not an epiphany. I didn't fall out in church. The questions I had didn't magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt that I heard God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth." Barack Obama

We need a MAN to run this country, not some asshole on his knees praying for forgiveness to a mythical saviour god. Yeah, on your knees is a good place to be - for something that he's probably very experienced at.

"That's a path that has been shared by millions upon millions of Americans - evangelicals, Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Muslims alike; some since birth, others at certain turning points in their lives. It is not something they set apart from the rest of their beliefs and values. In fact, it is often what drives their beliefs and their values." Barack Obama

"And by the way, we need Christians on Capitol Hill, Jews on Capitol Hill and Muslims on Capitol Hill talking about the estate tax." Barack Obama

Religion and estate taxes?

All religion is bullshit - it's a con game to get your money. Wars are being fought over it, the world may be destryed, and this idiot says it's good.

I'm sorry if anybody is offended, but I call 'em as I see 'em. This guy, whatever he is, is either lying or extremely stupid. He is not fit to hold the office of president of the United States. I would say the same thing about anybody, past or present, that comes out with rubbish like this.

Sounds like you're reaching for a reason to hate. Not a good thing, doesn't matter the topic. Sorry, this is in response to the initial post, I haven't read the rest of the post, don't really want to.

And I thought Mohammed's horse was named Isar, or something similar... cause it was similar to the word Christ... which I thought was ironic... or not... sorry, tangent. :)

Actually, he did go by the name Barry Soetoro in Indonesia when his mom was married to his stepdad. But the name on his birth certificate is "Barack Hussein Obama". There's a lot of nonsense out there about Barack's early years, and this article talks about a lot of them:

I think its exactly the opposite... if he were lying or if he were extremly stupid, then he is perfect to be the usas president. Look at Bush...

With such hate and anger directed at a man you barely know, only from what you see on TV and read on the internet, maybe you need to find his Jesus.

LOLOLOL!!!!! Indeed!!!! :S2:

And to the OP: I think no one can choose the name that is given to one by their parents. So no one should be judged by it.

That's actually a very good speech, considering the point of it is to get Christians to act more rationally, stop embracing this holier-than-thou attitude, and not use their religion as much as a reason to oppose laws. Considering he was talking to a group of devout CHRISTIANS, so when he says "you need to embrace Christ", he's talking to them, not you.

All religion is bullshit - it's a con game to get your money. Wars are being fought over it, the world may be destryed, and this idiot says it's good.
Can you imagine what would happen if he said religion was bad? No candidate for any office has enough political capital to pull that off and survive past the next election. Anyway, religion isn't a bad thing overall. The relative peace brought to Europe by Christianity enabled the renaissance and the industrial revolution. Many criminals become productive citizens after finding religion. And faith-based charities are responsible for a lot of the assistance and disaster relief in third-world countries.
