View Full Version : Why you grow?

Sorry if im being nosy or invasive, growing may be a personal topic for some. If you feel like sharing, I was just wondering what motivated you to grow?

I've been considering growing for a while now but it won't be in the near future becuase I still have to get my own place and I would rather not grow in a dorm room when im in university. I would grow my own plants because then I can have a varity of different plants and have which ever ones I want. I also won't have to pay a dealer for product. Also if I grow my own, I know where its been, I know what its been feed etc.

I was just wondering, whats your reasoning?

My room costs are roughly $60 a month and i'm yielding at least a 4 oz a month. I was spending $200-$300 a month when i was buying bags. So for me, a big motivator was money saving.

Another motivator is giving it away to friends. The less money my social circle spends on smoke, the more money we have to do fun things while high (camping trips, etc.) so that's awesome.

I also find it very therapeutic to grow. attention to details and schedules. The climate i've created and control in the room. it's like my little empire that i rule and when i do a good job, everyone is happy...much self satisfaction gained from the whole process.

I try to keep it as secret as possible. And i get a super self esteem boost when someone unknowingly tells me "this is some amazing shit..." i know that i grew it and it tops all the other shit that is being dealt in the area.

i could keep going...but i should do some work.

i love it.
skeet.

well i grow because i fell into being a pothead which i love and then growing just became a hobby for me...i rarely sell mine but i have figured up on my crop producing 17-21 oz. a yeild which is around $20 a gram which i usually sell if i do. but if i would sell all of what i grow i could prolly pull around 8G per plant giving the selling price of an ounce. but its more became a hobby and i smoke what i grow and i share. i share for free actually lol and all my friends love me for it cause im letting them smoke some good stuff for free...who couldnt ask for more!?

DANG!! That's gotta be some dank if you're selling that high per gram

If you stuck to selling more lower amount product than less higher amount product you could make at least 1500 more per 17oz. plant...

Dang...

WTF are YOU growing! 8k a plant? I think the most expensive shit I have heard of is 1200 an oz in socal...So...in summation...you have the DANKEST nug around, AND yield 7+ oz a plant....well, good on ya!!!

I personally agree with skeet...almost seems like he typed for me, lol. I grow for personal (and small group of friends) for medicine, and WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree on enjoying with those you care about...It shouldn't be all about making money. I find growing/breeding very therapeutic also...

I don't smoke much, so it doesn't save me a ton of money (maybe $200 or $300 per year). I am just so thankful for the plant that I want to learn all about it and try different strains and what not. I guess there a lot of reasons I grow, actually.

Right now I don't have a dealer, so that is part of it. But I could eventually find one if I really wanted to. I suppose I'm an independent type of person, and I don't like the thought of having to rely on another person for my cannabis.

Another part of the reason is that I feel like it is my civic duty. Strange, I know, but I feel like the laws against cannabis are *extremely* unethical, and I feel like my own little civil disobedience is to grow and keep the genetics of certain strains going.

Last but not least, cannabis is a very spiritual thing for me. I feel that I hear the guidance of the Holy Spirit much more clearly when I've smoked and I'm praying, meditating, or just walking through the woods. Growing my own just enhances that experience... I get to see the life cycle all the way through and experience the wonder of a seed turning into a great plant, the provision of the rain and sun, etc.

I must admit, sometimes my greed does get the better of me and my mouth. But Im always up for a new calming and theraputic experience, God knows I need one. I just find that interesting too because I find being outside and around plants and flowers very serene, I can't wait till I start my own grow:) It should be quite the experience.

I get to see the life cycle all the way through and experience the wonder of a seed turning into a great plant, the provision of the rain and sun, etc.

I've always been fascinated with this... the life cycle, growth, metamorphosis etc. expecially in humans. Mostly with babies though, watchin then go from fitting in your arms to a 6'4'' 250lbs hunk, and all with nutrition and exercise, its absolutly amazing!... I guess my blabbering was a little off point but what Im getting at is I know what you mean and I feel you there:D

To soothe my aches after a nice long hard day of soothing my aches. LOL,, really though I enjoyed smoking for a long time and it costs too much to smoke some good herb..So I ran across this board a few years ago and have spent 500.00 in the last four years for smoke other than my own.

Just moved back to our home town after 25 years so I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Heck, hadn't even smoked any in almost that long.

An old friend came to town and got us going again. He also contributed some bagseeds along with some killer smoke. I'll tell ya, after being dry for over two decades, that shit kicked my ass. Not the $10/4 finger bags I was used to way back when.

I digress. The wife and I have each stopped taking a prescription or two since starting up again and, for me, it's helping offset some of the effects of the chemo.

Because I like having a whole spice rack full of different types of bud. Seriously, who uses those things anyway? You get one as a housewarming gift, and then somehow the next person you know who moves gets the same one... from you... ; )
You just gotta change the labels from 'cinnamon', 'basil', etc to 'Purple Goober Dro Yo' and 'Donkey Dick Sugar Cane' and all that good stuff, and hope that the in-laws don't try to make a ratatouille at your house. Because no one likes a Donkey Dick in his ratatouille.

true words...my live in girlfriend and I have an understanding. That for the rest of my life, as long as im free to do so...i will grow my own herb! why? :

1. i find the reverence for the plant, and find its complexities amazing.(reason to grow not smoke)
2. i find it therapeutic (medically and mentally)for several reasons.
3. I find it to be benign to my health
4. i believe its my god given right to do so
5. i believe its my constitutional right to do so
6. its a fun hobby where you get to see life at its best
7. because i no longer have to hustle to break even..... ie. MONEY! i was sorry to hear some people put this first!

I am doing this for the fun of it and to some extent for the hell of it. A smaller but still pleasant part is that I get super quality cheap weed from it. Actually that is why, in that order, I grow cb. I grow more than I will ever smoke and I have no plan to sell. I enjoy taking care of every branch and leave. To sit with a book an hour in my flowering room and to have something NOONE, not even one person, around me knows I have. If it was tomatoes I would not spare a minute on this hobby. With cb I love it. Strange?

Now, I suspect I don't represent the majority of growers in that respect but it would be interesting still to hear what drives people.

I can easilly get 5-7 ounces/month out of my small operation and I smoke maybe 1.5/month. Easy way would be to just cut down on the number of plants etc but I can't do that. I am going the other way and have a 25 plant cloner and bubblers for my flowering plants on their way here.
Stupid?
Indeed it is. I am growing stuff that can give me jailtime for no apparent reason, lol. It is really fun to perfect things and work out ways to get around problems and generally just become better at this over time. I also run insanelly detailed registers of EVERYTHING I do day by day to the grow. Watering, when, how much, with what nutes. Temp, humidity, light range from plants. Daily general notes and plant by plant notes if something special happened to a plant. I do this in a grow diary I put together in Excel and it takes care of naming systems for every plant, history of every plant in the past, background of every clone and plant back to the original seed etc etc.

My goal in the long run is to become a very good CB grower with good instincts. I would love to breed or grow on a large scale as well but I don't have the space for it so I do what I can with my small areas. Will keep a constant 8 plants in flower fed from 3 mothers of different strains. I am in the process of building up my second strain as we speak and will add the third next month. Hindu Kush, White Whidow an last will probably be Strawberry Cough.

So what drives you guys and are there anyone like me out there?

I grow it for my wife, she has a medical condition, that under Washington State law gives us the opportunity to grow her medicine.
Buying off the street is costly and there is no quality control.

Now if she doesn't like the quality, she has only me to blame.

I grow for many reasons.

First is to save money at $300.00 to even $500.00 for an ounce of Kind Bud ( all encompassing strains) I never paid the $500.00 but is not uncommon for the younger Generation on the Street. Hell I have seen it go for $50.00 a gram at clubs. Then the usual price for Mexican brick weed is $150.00 or more

Second: Steady supply for me and my friends. Before I started growing KB was hard to find and very sporadic. I do Charge to cover my costs but keep it within a small group of friends at deeply discounted price and in quantities so that they cannot resell.

Third: I have 2 friends with cancer and supply their medication for free.

Fourth: Therapeutic I am a recovering alcoholic and this keeps my mind occupied with good things and not dormant in front of the TV getting depressed and letting my mind trick me into drinking again.

Lets start by saying we save a boatload of money. between the 2 of us we would burn about $10k during the course of the year on personal use. I have huge back and neck problems which is lessened by smoke and GF has degenerative joint disease which pain is also lessened by smoking. Not to mention she is also an agoraphobic (afraid to leave the house also classified as panic person) and between the smoke and my support we can go to stores, take the motorcycle for a ride and so on.

I grow much for the same reason I do most things: I feel like I can do it better myself. I also absolutely love the redolence of growing green. It also serves as a great hobby especially since I have a genuine interest in all things scientific and playing with genetics simply tickles me to no end.

I had alot of muscle and nerve tissue removed due to a nasty ass cancer, the Docs prescribed all kinds of interesting pills to help with the pain. I did those for a couple of years till my wonderful family told me what a ass I had become. Pills didnt make the pain go away it just screwed with my head. I went to BC and learned as much as I could bought some beans and started medicating myself. I now fit in ,work full time and have a rather pleasant disposition. I raise a cross that I developed specifically for my needs and it works very well. I have never sold but freely give to those in need. Hopefully when I die the Gods will shine down upon my freinds and family.Peace

Why you grow???

Many, many reasons...the main one being that the VA couldnt put a bandaid on a cut, let alone know the first thing about PTSD.

2 years, and 6-7 different prescriptions later, I gave up on them, and decided to put some faith in some seeds, water and light. It's been working :)

And it's really fun :)

However my issue is that I LOVE premium, sticky, trichromed, delicious buds so much that it's all I ever want to get. i grow for medical use, though not legal. it nearly impossible to get it legally unless you have what they consider a serious illness or condition, cancer, hiv, severe chronic pain ext. I'll be dammed if I'll let the government keep medicine that works for me just cause they dont deem me worthy
