View Full Version : White Rhino YELLOWING LEAVES

Naturally I am a little worried, so I decided to post this, in hopes of some feedback.
Have 4 White Rhino ladies.....soil grow w/ 400w HPS in my walk-in closet. Started flowering.....and the first oddity I noticed is it tool a good 2 weeks for pestils to show on a 12/12 cycle (from 20/4) which is longer than any strain I have ever grown. Used FoxFarm Open Sesame (1 tsp to a gallon every other watering) and water every other day, 1 1/2 gallons for 4 plants. Everythiong seemed great. Last week (week 4) I noticed a few fan leaves on each plant but the littlest lady (3 out of 4) are yellowing and some at the bottom of the lowest shoots (pics included). Week 5 the second node fan leaves have yellowed (cut 1st stage ones off last week) abd a fewer lower shoot leaves are as well, but i have not cut them yet. I have started FoxFarm BeastieBloomz on week 5 and am continuing on w/ feeding schedule. I added 2 pinches of epsom salt today as it is my first thought that it may somehow be the Mag level.
I am aware of this happening at the end of flowering cycle, but not in the middle. But it is only 1/2 wat through and I have all white pestils(none orange) and the groth and bud stack looks on pace. I am thinking this is a trait of the rhino....but I AM STILL A LITTLR WORRIED:) Grow NL, Crystal, Early Misty and a friens skunk breed. About my 6th grow and am still considering myself a noob.
If it matters at week 1 I upgraded from a 250w hps to a 400w hps in hopes of using a MH conversion bulb for the first time in Veg, but I increased the airflow to accomodate for extra heat. Hope this wasent a mistake. THANKS FOR ANY HELP OR INSIGHT U CAN OFFER.

Sure nothing is being locked out by your pH? I've grown White Rhino a couple of times, and I really don't think what you're showing is the typical nitrogen deficiency. Also, how long have they been in those pots?

Transplanted from these at switch to 12/12. Soil is FoxFarm "ocean Forrest". As a noob....lol...I dont know how I lock out Ph......I do not feed plant in veg, never have...was told soil will feed if I transplant for flowering cycle and use Nutes only in flowering. Only straight water in veg...then nutes every other watering as directed by FoxFarm
And TYVM for the help

I dont know how I lock out Ph
Using water from a source that's too alkaline or acidic will also influence the pH of your soil. It may not be pH related at all, but just to be on the safe side, try to get a reading on the water you're using and the soil. Obviously, you'll need to know the pH from the water source before you test the runoff. You can get a liquid test kit from most gardening centers at Walmart, Lowe's, etc. They only cost a few bucks.
After you've determined that, fill out as many answers to these questions as you can possibly list from our Troubleshooting Form (http://boards.cannabis.com/plant-problems/127058-troubleshooting-form-yay-you-know-you-wanted-one.html):
-indoor or outdoor
-soil, soilless, or hydroponic
-specific medium
-Soil type/brand
-Hydro/aero/soilless system type
-Anything you have added to the soil
-Soil pH
-Water source
-Water pH
-Age of plant
-Type of fertilizer
-Rate of application
-Lighting source and distance from plant
-Temperature (both day and night if you are running a dark period)
-% Relative humidity
-Lighting schedule
-Type of ventilation your room has
I'm not the best at diagnosing deficiencies, so I'll gladly hand it off to someone more qualified. It may take another day or so before one of our green-thumb members or mods show up, but don't worry, they'll show. And having the information listed above filled out to the best of your ability will really give them a better idea about what's ailing ya.

IMO, that plant is actually pretty healthy, with a couple issues.
What I see:
-You just transplanted so the rootbound condition that you probably had before judging by the downturned leaf edges and tips visible on some leaves is taken care of.
-Yellow leaves can be caused also by insufficient light, and you just upgraded.
-Time to start feeding... that's a hungry, nitrogen deficient plant. Since you are only in the first couple weeks of flower, you can feed a grow fert safely. You DO need a complete fertilizer with micros, and be certain that your soil runoff pH reads between 6.3 and 6.8. Give a 'grow' fert or your bloom fert plus a weak dose of fish emulsion until the end of week 2 of flowering to keep that yellow from spreading this early in the game.
You rventilation is correct.
You will need a much larger pot in about 3 weeks, as SOON as your roots have filled that one, so be prepared for that. One gallon per foot of main stem is the minimum.

Thanks for the reply. The one thing I am confused about it that I am going into the 5th week of flowering, not my second,,,,so my plants have been in those containers for about 4 weeks. I have yet to get a Ph meter, but i will tommarow. The plants werent really that rootbound when I trans them. Top leaves are acctually sticking out streaight...no drooping...that pic was just after the lights came on. The only noticable probs are at the bottom 1st nodes shoot leaves...and the first three sets of fan leaves (1st 3 nodes). One of the plants shows NO yellow and one shows very little. I am wondering if I am overwatering. Evert-other day w/ 1 1/2 gallons of water for 4 plants that are all in 2 gal containers. I would try to transplant next if the prob isnt nitrogen. I am curious....is the 3 part FoxFarm system (disolvable - open ses, beast bloomz and cha ching) all that I need for flowering, or am I supossed to be using other nutes too?
And again TYVM for all the help

Okay week 5... play it real differently then!
First off, the plants might benefit quite a bit from a larger home. The new soil should be light with GREAT drainage to prevent overwatering and maximize oxygen to the roots at this very important time in bud development.
Next, late in flowering, yellowing low leaves is not uncommon or even undesirable. You have ~3 weeks to go if you are running an average indoor strain, and that is about what I'd expect to see.
So my advice:
Larger pot with good drainage, fresh light soil, and as for fertilizing, keep doing what you're doing. Let the soil dry out a bit between waterings too.

Thanks for the acvise. I have never had to transplant at this stage...but I will try, It cant hurt right?!?...lol.
By the way. I am sure you dont want to hear this...according to some of the posts I have seen:):):)....but I have purple/red fan leaf stems and a few lower shoots show the same.

That's not always a sign of a problem. Since you are starting to see late-flower N deficiency, it's virtually EXPECTED that your petioles will start to look reddish as chlorophyll breaks down, and some strains show red petioles even under perfect conditions.
Be certain that your runoff pH is correct to eliminate lockouts as a problem, and happy harvestin'.

They sure look hungry to me. It also appears you are using only Micro nutes (Open Sesame, Beasty Bloom and Cha Ching. Did I miss something????? These products usually supplement your primary nutes.

Oh snap! Missed that! Where's your primary bloom fert? That explains a lot!

Well I guess I mis-understood my supplier....cause I was told the soil was good enough for bloom nutes (Ocean Forrest) and all I am adding to my water is the OPSes,BeastBloomz and Chaching....right now I am on the Beastie bloomz being the middle of my flowering.
So...if I understand you right I need additional stuff in my water all the wat through the grow? The soil I use dosent contain enough....even with a transplant at the switch to 12/12? I have never really gotten the yeild I expected (6th grow) but the quality was always great.
So the advise i need i guess is what to do from here. The plants are 5 wks into flowering...including the 2 weeks it took to show any signs of sex. Just stopped the Open sesame last week...and have just started feeding the beastie bloomz. The help is very appreciated and and I can only hope to return the favor

Only stuff I got at the moment is schultz plant food (10-15-10) will this work as a suppliment?

Your grow guy is correct that Ocean Forest contains a high level of fertilizer compared to other media, but it's still not quite enough as you can see.
OF is too 'hot' for small seedlings, and as with all pre-fertilized media, you should fertilize with caution all the way through... but you still need some sort of plant food. Start out a bit weaker than recommended and work up until you see just a bit of tip-burn, then water heavily on the next feeding (to the point of runoff) and back off to the last point at which the plants were hungrily uptaking the ferts without scorching.
Edit: Shultz isn't the best, but it'll do for now- I would only use it for one or 2 feedings since it has far too much N for a flowering plant, and you are getting close to harvest anyway. All you are trying to do at this point is to keep the yellow from getting much worse, while continuing to put on bud mass. Too much nitrogen can slow the production of buds, so you must use it with caution. It's the first # btw.

Ill keep saying it...thanks again for all the help. Imma try feeding my girls a lil for a few feedings and see how it goes. Will update with new pics too.
Any suggestions for a product to use through my next grow would be helpful. Baring in mind I am trying to keep it simple....soil grow, w/ city water;) (let sit out fior 2 days) and using the FoxFarm flowering stuff I already have......maybe even pot sizes and when to transplant. Also am buying new seeds and would love any suggestions. Have bought NL and rhino, early misty and crystal. The best producer so far has been the misty. Dare i try femenized seeds????? I get about 50% males at the moment. Seed bank reccomendations appreciated too. Want good genetics;)

I'm not personally a great fan of femmed seeds for the risk of hermies.
You want a beast? Go with Pure Power Plant... She's a classic, she's a yielder, she's a STABLE line (you can then make your own seeds and never buy them again), and you can find beans online. I got mine from seedboutique (no complaints there) but there are plenty of other vendors and I'm not here to push any one vendor over another.
If you like the idea of the FoxFarm line, and can find it, go the whole way and add the Grow Big and their proprietary bloom fert (big bloom? ehh I'm forgetful) to your OF and supplements and follow the company's feeding schedule. This will make your life easier, since they are all designed to be compatible.
As for pot sizes and transplanting, take a peek at my Donkey Dick grow log. That's how I like to do it personally and find that it is an efficient use of both light and space.

OF is too 'hot' for small seedlings, and as with all pre-fertilized media, you should fertilize with caution all the way through
Please forgive for thread jacking but would you mind expanding on this Stinky?
You mean it would be too rich for a freshly popped seed right?
Would OF be too hot for a rooted clone to be planted into?
stinkyattic
03-11-2008, 12:37 PM
Yup, exactly- it is too rich for a young seedling. Happy Frog or a cheap seed starting mix from a nursery are much better for seedlings, which don't need ANY added nutes at first.
Transplanting a rooted clone into a pre-fertilized soil, I'd use caution. If the clone was rooted in a plug or peat pellet, or even right into seedling mix or promix, I wouldn't worry about it. If the clone was rooted in a bubbler/DWC/aero type cloner, I'd first plant it into seedling starting or promix and then when it is starting vertical growth, transplant NEXT into the FFOF.
Hope that helps?

Suppposedly Ocean Forest has what they term starter nutes. I've rooted cuttings and seedlings in it and they came out fine. However, I must state that I used the ocean forest only because of a logistical problem and wouldn't recommend it, but if you do use it, don't add any nutes to it for a couple weeks.

The FoxFarm bloom nute is called Tiger Bloom (2-8-4)and the Big Bloom is their tea. I switched to Pure Blend tea as it's the same thing but cheaper.

Ok......so I was weighing my options, thanks to all the great advise. I decided to re-pot the plants in 4 gal cheap plastic containers (5 nice big drainage holes in bottom). The last 2 1/2 gal ones were too small and had a res bottom preventing any drainage;( I left the girls un-watered for 5 whole days...and they never drooped...not even a lil. So my thought was I had 3 probs to deal w/ . Overwatering.......Undersized pots.....and a lack of proper nutes. I bought Pro-Mix soil and mixed it w/ some worm castings (3 tbsp each). Honestly I am impressed w/ the soil...very light and airy feeling;) When I pulled the plants out of the containers I saw a major root binding prob...as expected. I dropped the girls on 6" of fresh bed and filled sides to the top (very close call....so hard to get in safely) Gave them some water....and a sched of BeastieBlooms....and now I wait.
I have posted some pics. I think the root-bound ones will help some others realize what a mistake a small container can be;) 1 gallon to 1' growth, I will never forget. The flowering deff slowed for a week....bot they look rather fresh and I am hoping to get a decent yield after this.
Place ur bets...lol....will be posting pics of the tops and overall plant all through the rest of the flowerinbg cycle. Any opinions about what will happen would be appreciated...I am not sensitive so let em' fly;) I think I can get 5-6 more weeks....as I am in the 5th weeks now.

Well I have about given up. I have taken any/and all steps fesable to fix my yellowing and growth problem. And I am left wondering...
1) Checked Ph of both water and soil....along w/ N - P and K levels...all looks ok.
2) Transplanted in fresh soil, and bigger pots....with added N with no results
3) Left unwatered for 5 days...w/ the thought of overwatering had happened. No results. Back to regular watering cycle (added 1 more dry day)
4) Checked root growth for mold or discolorization.....nothing there either.
I am left w/ answer A or B as a possability.
A) Bad genetics....had 6 fems....gave 2 away...... show similar signs. Had grown 2 plants from the same package a few grows ago and they to were strange...grew straight up w/ large cola...but NO SHOOT GROWTH at all.
B) Cigarette smoke....searched all the boards I could find and I think it may have an effect on my grow. When I grow in spring/summer I have a fan blowing air out window in LR where I hang and party. But in winter/fall I do not...and the closet is within 15' of the LR with 2 fans blowing air on plants. I chain smoke when sitting at computer...and the air is full of smoke (not just cig smoke). I have decided to try to quit...but in the mean time I will take ALL cigarette smoke outside.
Does anyone think the cigs could have done it?!?!?!?!?
Mr. Clandestine

Does anyone think the cigs could have done it?!?!?!?!?
It's never a good idea to smoke around any digital equipment, but this hasn't stopped me from smoking (cigarettes and cannabis) while in my growrooms. I'm usually pretty careful not to purposefully blow smoke on the plants, or on the equipment itself, but they've both certainly been in contact with it. Never noticed any problems from this alone. If you've ruled out practically every possibility, and are still coming up empty, then you've probably just got some less-than-perfect genetics.

Well....all i can say is WOW. Of all the ideas....something sure worked;) I fed my ladies last night and was amazed to see noticable growth....both tall and wide on my budz. Still have a few yellow leaves left...but mostly the big fan leaves, but with 3 1/2 weeks left I am now not concerned at all.
I will be a bit surprised if it was the cig smoke. It is either that or the extra room and the worm castings in the new pots. I have now tied em' all down...as the the goal now is to get about 1/2 the expected yield. I will be untying one of my girls and posting new pics...prob monday. I tie my tops back at almost 45 degrees toward side walls...then tie all the shoots together towards middle of the grow room. Have found that if I do this I get similar looking budz on all parts....not just the top cola. Any thoughts?
Also one more question...when i transplanted from 2 1/2 to 4 gallon pots....I found a clump the shape of the pot w/ a solid mostly root clump (see pic on bottom of first page). I had one friend say to pull it all apart carefully and loosen all roots....another said to just get a good bottom layer of soil and fill sides and top...leaving root ball in tact. Any thoughts?

Thanks man. I have 2 weeks left on a 8 week flowering. I am pretty sure they could go for a week or two longer. My hairs are abot 30-40% orange w/ only a few noticable amber trics. The bud tops still show lil light green spots of new growth....and are still getting noticablly bigger. I am hoping for a strong finish. Still plan on stopping all nutes and running only water on the last week, but will decide next weekend. Likelly to run 1 more tbsp of blackstrap molasses this week as well (thanks to this forum for all the posts on the stuff, never even heard of using it).

Well my ladies are done. Going into 48hrs of darkness as of Sat...last watering (plain) done tonight. By my calcs I am at week 8 of flowering. A close amber check....showed a few more....so I am calling it a done deal. Thanks to all who helped. I will be posting finished pics after my trim and final harvest.
The 1 thing I am good at is telling yield. I am usually very close. I am only expecting 1.75 to 2 oz dry bud per plant x 3...and .75 to 1 oz from the midget freak plant. I know this is low for this strain and the space/light. But armed w/ my new knowledge...my next grow will be twice as bountiful.
5 pics....1 group...and 1 of each girl. (Sorry for the weak camera)

Well I am sorry for not posting pics after the trim and hack down. I figured I would finish this tread with a few final totals and pics. I was way off on my calculated yield. I got about 4 dry oz. of all four ladies. But I must say the buds are phenomonal. Very sticky and tasty. This is a dissapointment, but my next grow will surelly make up for it. I am going with Blueberry, Mango, Belladonna and something called Sweet tooth. Seeds ariving any day now. I plan on cloning as much as possable and growing outdoors as well as in. I will be posting my new grow indoors soon. THANKS AGAIN ALL and see you soon.....with a new camera too:)....lol
