Hey, I had not smoked in about a month, and smoked with some of my friends last night. I got really messed up, probably because 1: I hadn't smoked in 3 weeks. 2: It was out of a zong, and I took 1 huge hit, then hours later took 2 more huge hits. and 3: It is the best stuff I've ever smoked. as the night went on, I felt/thought I was trapped in my own world. I thought the only way out was to either throw up or kill myself. I did not know what reality was, where we came from, why we are here. it was disturbing to me, everything was looping, and there was no way out other than death. I wanted to call 911, or do something to help me from hurting myself or someone else. my friends kept me calm, and mostly from doing anything stupid. I ended up throwing up and sleeping. I woke up hours later, ate some food, and fell back asleep. when I woke up today, I was still really confused as to what reality is. I wasn't as bad as the night before, looking out the window really helped. what started the bad trip was listening to some "dark" music, it was pulling me down it felt like. what I'm getting at is this: should I smoke again? I NEVER want to trip like that, I'm still a little confused. I do take lexapro for anxiety/mild depression, and had not slept much at all the 2 days before I smoked. Any advice of how I can keep this from ever happening again? also, side note, my friends are all getting shrooms, would it be a bad idea for me to try that out? I've never done it before and am really curious... hopefully you can give me some good advice, please help me out here!!

I think you should build your tolerance up before taking any huge rips from bongs or 'zongs'. I'm not ever sure what that is. Take it easy, and learn to relax when you do smoke again. If it's something you eventually learn to enjoy, you'll find out just how much works for you, and these bad 'trips' will become less frequent.
Lastly, we don't discuss mushrooms or any other type of illicit drug in any of these forums. Go to Erowid.com or something if you want to research more into that. These boards are strictly limited to medical marijuana and its patients. Just FYI.
Take care.

i agree with Mr.Clandestine that you should start small and need to be in a relaxed environment. dont use a zong, thats over doing it. I would start with a toke or two from a pipe and see how that suits you. If it happens again i would ask your doctor about the possibility that cannabis may be reacting harshly with your prescription. there is a patient doctor privacy law the prohibits them from telling anyone of your smoking

I've had bad trips before and this is how I defeated it.
Know that it is 100% mental. I believe this is true. Know that before starting to smoke. Ask your friends if they think it's all mental or not to make yourself sure. Also mood influences your high, so try to be in a happy setting with chill music and close friends.

Hmm... in addition to smoking less at first, get some goddamn sleep!
Sleep deprivation causes strange thoughts, and even hallucinations. The theory is that the brain needs to dream, must dream, and will dream, even if the body does not sleep. I have hallucinated severely from sleep deprivation. I had not slept in about 30 hours or so. I felt fine. I was driving my girlfriend home, then BAM! I started hallucinating like mad. I kept thinking signs were people about to run across the road. I didn't tell my girlfriend because she didn't have a driver's license, so I just just kept going. Another thing sleep deprivation causes is lack of judgment.
It also may be reacting with your meds, which the others' said. Most anti-anxiety, and anti-depressants are psychotropics which put you into a semi-dreamlike state so negative feelings don't bother you as much.
Next time, listen to some chill music like reggae, or ambient music instead of metal or industrial, or watch a comedy movie like Half-Baked, or The Holy Grail. Also remember that it's all in your head, and you can control your thoughts.
I personally feel that weed makes me more focused. I kick ass so much more at Halo when I am stoned, because it makes me more focused. If I am thinking about funny things, happy things, I really focus on those thoughts. I get philosophical when I am high too. There is nothing wrong with questioning the nature of reality and existence, but you, in particular should probably not do that when you are high, because it leads you to such negative dark thoughts and feelings.
Tell your friends that you don't want to smoke so much next time. Just take a smaller hit from the bong, or smoke from a joint or pipe. Just take one hit, and wait about an hour. If you feel fine and that is as high as you want to be, then don't smoke anything more for the rest of the day. You be the judge of how much you want to smoke, and how high you want to feel.
There have been quite a few times where I smoked with some very heavy smokers. I am talking about people that smoke an 1/8 a day. (I normally smoke about 1/8 a week.) They are really cool, and want me to get as high as they are, but they just don't get that I am already more high than they are from those four big hits from that foot long blunt!
Yes, marijuana is hallucinogenic for some people some times. I call hallucinogens "absorbing drugs." In other words, it makes you feel like a sponge, and all senses are heightened, and thoughts are more intense. Whatever your environment is, you feel more of a part of. Just think about that next time, and set the mood with music, movies, cool friends. Maybe next time, go for a walk in the woods, or the beach. It's a cool feeling to be out in nature when you are high. You notice the sun, the winds, the water, the animals, flowers, and trees a lot more.
Peace.

I agree with a lot that has already been said especially being in a relaxed environment. I find it very enjoyable smoking in the morning watching the sun come up and just listening to the sounds of nature. It takes away the stress. Music is also good to listen to while you blaze, pink floyd and a fat one go hand in hand.

I had a bad trip the other night. But I'm pretty good at thinking myself out of that stuff.
Here's what to do.
1. Go to the bathroom to collect yourself away from others.
2. Take a few deep breaths - but not too deep, or you may trigger vomiting.
3. Sit down for a moment and put your head down for a moment (this may or may not help depending on the cause of your anxiety). Rub your temples and give yourself a scalp massage.
4a. Identify the thing that is freaking you out. Often this might be overstimulation. Maybe you didn't get enough sleep. Maybe you don't trust the people you are with. Maybe things are just too crazy - like at a party or something.
4b. Get a handle on your anxiety - identify the concrete things in your physical environment that might be causing your bad trip. If nothing, then think about what in your life is nagging at you. You might need to find a quiet spot or go outside if you can't immediately identify the trigger.
5. Pee. Sometimes it can help get toxins out and help you feel better.
6. Wash your hands with cold water and splash a bit on your face.
7. Two more deep breaths.
8. Go outside, if needed, or return to party and monitor yourself after sitting quietly for a moment. Drink a glass of water.
This ritual unto itself can be comforting, as it is something concrete and familiar to return to in a tense situation. Concrete is important - don't let yourself stray from reality too far when having a bad time.
Oh yeah - and about me, the other night - I thought the bathroom tile was moving and doing crazy shit. It freaked me out until I was like, "But wait, dude, that is SO sweet." Positive attitude and a trusting outlook are super-important. You gotta trust the drug to lead you somewhere good, and it probably will.

I had a bad trip too. I smoked weed for 2 years now and the last 3times I smoked I had a bad trip. First I start feeling really really high, then I got real hot and I felt dizzy and not feeling my tounge. My heart then starts beating really fast. I dont kno why that happened I smoked at least 30 times before that, and I am scared to smoke again. Mary Jane has been so good to me in the past. Anyone know what happened?

I had my only bad experience with cannabis after taking a bowl of some Sour Diesel from a gravity bong with a gallon jug and then watching BodySong. BodySong is a pretty graphic art film basically about the human life span. It was pretty disturbing when I was that fucked up, mainly because it made me think too introspectively about my own life and such. Dark, depressing, or emotionally jarring music or films can definitely "drag you down" when you're using a psychoactive, even cannabis. Its all about having a comfortable and controlled environment and just tell yourself you're under the influence of a psychoactive and it will be over soon. If you start to feel uncomfortable, go somewhere that you feel comfortable and collect yourself for as long as you need. You can fight the notion to call 911 by telling yourself you'll never die from smoking cannabis because you never will!
As for the person above me, what kind of cannabis were you smoking? I've smoked some pretty crazy strains and never had that reaction. If it was regs/schwag, its possible it could have been dipped in something bad or possibly "laced" with who knows what, although I don't know very many people that still do that. If that is the case, you can thank the War on Drugs for a tainted and unregulated cannabis supply, but if not, I'm afraid I am of no help as I have never had an experience like that.

Some strong sativas will make you feel that way. That could very well have been the reason you felt like that. They are not recommended for inexperienced smokers as they can play with deep emotions especially if you are an anxious or depressed person. After all, sativas have an ability to be psychedelic and psychoactive. Stick to indica.

I have never once had a bad experience with weed. Bad things have happened while Ive been high, ive been extremely high, past the point of my own normal limit, but ive always felt that every time anything bad has happened, it was better than It would have been elsewise because I was high.
In fact, i would pay $30 for a gram of some shit that would do that kinda thing to me again.

Just a reminder, folks, that you need to limit discussions and speculations about bad-trip causes to cannabis and/or legally prescribed medicines and leave out mentions of other illicit and/or herbal substances. Had to delete three posts above that went beyond the cannabis-only policy, which is always regrettable.

It is a panic attack, I'm amazed at how many people have never heard of it. One of the nights at schoolies (holiday with mates after highschool in case americans don't know) I smoked and got a massive panic attack, even though I had smoked the same weed every other night during schoolies and been fine. I started thinking about what it could have been laced with and then saying nah it's alright I had it last night etc then saying but it could just not have been in that bit etc etc rationalizing my fear. I just got caught in the emotion and started sweating cold and all those typical panic attack symptoms such as hypo and then hyper-ventilating. Light headed, massive head buzz, everything in the environment kinda fades away as you only pay attention to your emotions. I walked over to a quieter place and passed out, woke up a minute later and was perfectly fine. haha but I had taken 2 Xanax (prescribed to me) before I started smoking and so I guess it must have just kicked in maybe because my heart was racing faster, circulating it quicker or something. Very handy though.
Pretty much jsut do as everyone else has said, don't do shrooms coz if you have a bad trip on that you will be a million times worse then a bad trip on weed. If you want to continue smoking then just go with small doses. Indica strain. I actually found that smoking a tiny bit, couple tokes of a joint, not really enough to induce panic attacks or even get you that high, just to relax, and then relaxing completely for about 15 minutes or until you feel really comfortable with smoking more, it really helps. If you don't wanna smoke more, don't. Simple as that. Don't let people pressure you or anything, doing so is basically asking for trouble, the reason you decide not to smoke more is because you don't want to, you're at a comfortable level. Don't let other people change that.
