This is my first grow. I am growing 4 plants in 17qt containers with miracle grow soil. For the start of the vegatative phase, I am currently using a 200watt cfl, two 100watt cfls, and a 75watt flourescent 'grow light' tube purchased from walmart (piece of shit). I have purchased mylar to coat the walls of my 4.5' x 2.5' space located in my closet.

I realize my yield will be highly compromised by the lack of light in this space, so I plan to invest in a HPS ballast system when the flowering stage seems to be near. A friend of mine recently told me that using an HPS light in a small area in coherence with Mylar will burn the plants. I am skeptical of this, I believe a certain strenghth HPS light will work wonders in the 4.5 x 2.5' space with mylar.

My question is, what amount of wattage HPS ballast system will insure me a strong light source and won't inconjunction with the mylar - BURN MY PLANTS

400 HPS is ideal for 4 plants. Use flat white paint instead of mylar. Providing ventilation for the 400 will be less work than using CFL's....IMO...;)

You will always need 10-15 inches of space, between the top of the plants and the bulb, when using 400 HPS...(unless using cool tubes)

I'd prefer to keep the mylar if I have already paid for it. Is it possible to use maybe a 250watt HPS and with the mylar get solid results?

I have an 400 watt hps in a 6'x3'x3' space with mylar lined walls.

My temps stay at 82 degrees at the canopy of the plants with the light 19" away.

I am only running an exhaust and a circulatory fan. You can check it out at my flowering log. I don't know how tall your space is I'm pretty stoned and lazy right now. heh
