Looking to get a digital ph tester the pen style and would like something waterproof and something that will last for a while for a good price. does anyone have any suggestions on what to get or where to get? would also like to know what to stay away from.

I'd recommend the Oakton brand, just about anything they have. You can pick up their Ultra Basic pH meter for around $70-80 online or in-person.

I personally wouldn't buy a combination (pH and EC) meter because they tend to have more problems, expire quicker, and require more frequent calibration to maintain accuracy.

I also would tell you that I will not buy anything from Hanna. They have awesome super-high end pieces, but anything you would want from them would be worthless (in my opinion).

Notice how every paragraph begins with an 'I'? They're all opinion, so don't take it to heart.

Since opinions count (:D) I just bought something off amazon.com called and Extech ph meter and I'm in love with it. Easy to calibrate.....stays calibrated and is very waterproof. I paid $90 for it's actually become more my favorite than the expensive Truncheon I use as well.

I have a Milwaukee. It's a good meter. About $70.

I'll join those who say stay away from the inexpensive Hanna meters - they're junk.

I will also vouch for Hanna sucking. I got their $59 meter (the Champ) and went through two within 2 months. It goes out by .3 about every day, and even if you calibrate it every day, it will get to the point where the screw will not turn down and you will never get a true reading. I switched to a TriMeter constant read and its great.

I am also looking to get a good meter and came across this site while researching what to buy. Might be of help to those of us who like to know what makes these things tick.

pH meter (http://www.ph-meter.info/pH-meter)

Got the link from a UBC forum, should be legit info.

Yeah the ti-meter 3 in 1 constant read is very good and very high and very worth it.

The problem with the liquid test kits it that you cannot accurately test your nutrient solution (because it is a dark-colored liquid). People who use those kits generally test the pH of their water before adding nutrients and fail to compensate for the sometimes drastic pH change resulting from the addition.

Truncheon by Bluelab. Search it. I love it. Most bestest meter I've seen or had.

I figured I better start out as cheaply as I could..so stepped up from the fish tank charts to these...they sure make a difference in your grow...do a search on Pen Type PH/TDS meters...TDS meter $22.95..PH meter was about the same or close I do believe...

Yes Milwaukee is another good brand. I have two of them with no complaints, and I've heard a lot of others say good things about them as well. One step up is Oakton, which don't have.
