View Full Version : Life-Changing Decision

Hey guys, Iā??m in a potentially life-changing situation right now. Not in a life or death or a physically harmful sort of way. Basically for the past year I have been going to a community college and taking classes full-time, Iā??m currently extremely unhappy about that ā??cause not only do I take classes full time but I work at a retail store that I fucking hate(Iā??m not doing too well at my classes either). At the same time I donā??t want to let down my family ā??cause I want to make them proud and make something of myself. I should also mention that my parents could drug test me at any moment even though they havenā??t because I got my shit together somewhat(SWIM only does psychedelics every now and then even though SWIM loved weed and wish to pursue it once again). Basically in my eyes I have two main choices. I know the choice probably sounds obvious to onlookers but I could always use a fresh pair of eyes as my neurons might be misfiring.
1) Stay the course and feel empty throughout my school career.(I would transfer to a four-year eventually)
2) Quit school for a while, work full time, move out, maybe take 1 or 2 classes, still go to school but at a slower pace, do whatever the fuck I want, and most importantly enjoy life!
3) Other (Describe please)
This choice has clouded my mind for some time now, I must make this decision now for the next semester starts in about a month or so. I would appreciate feedback. I know this isn't the Dr. Phil message boards but what the hell...:hippy:

The way you framed the question should tell you that #2 is what you think is right for you. You gotta do whats right for yourself.
For me, its getting school over with so I can do start my career as a badasss (and learn something cool along the way).

I wont get off on a rant about our educational system and college.A college degree is for the most part the new h.s. diploma. I would ask your self why are you in school and what do you want to accomplish? If your going to school because its expected or you feel you have to in order to get a "decent" job, well then you are not going to be satisfied or happy being in school.I can only speak for myself but if I was in school just to get a "decent" job Im essentially still a wage slave to the system and I wasnt very happy working 50-60 hours a week,Im sure as hell not going to be very happy working 30-40 hours per week doing homework and 15-20 hours sitting in a classroom taking courses Im not really interested in nor care about just to maintain a gpa that would allow me to take the next "expected" step in my education (does that make sense?).
I know your a young person and I probably sound like one of those cranky old bastards but...life is really to short and precious not to do something that makes you happy or that you enjoy.Look at all the pissed off zombies shuffling off to work everyday at jobs they hate because they are trapped by "stuff" and expectations.I would say find something that you are passionate about and figure out a way to make a living doing that.I wish you well and hope things work out for you the way you want them to,good luck my friend, take care,be well, and most of all be safe.

Thanks for the reply man, much appreciated, I'm still searching for my purpose and until then won't rush myself into something I will possibly regret.:hippy:

I would stay in school, I would sit down and have a chat with your parents and REALLY look at your options about quiting the other problem you have, FULL time job.. Do what you can, borrow money, get a grant for this or that. Stay in school and do what is best for you. Remember the brain is just a muscle and you always have to be working it.
school and weed isn't hard. Just have to enjoy and not to indulge.
good luck with the decision.

I say 2, go do what you need to do to discover yourself and probably will lead to what you want to do in life. Don't stay in school if you don't think its what you really want to do because you'll probably end up hating what you do in the end anyway.
Thats what I'm doing. I gave up school twice to work full-time, chill relax , find myself. Afterall that, I finally decided what I really want to do.

Well... as people already said, do what you want to do... life is too short for waste it doing what you dont like... enjoy your life while you are alive... cause death is stalking, and nothing, NOTHING ensures us that we will live even one more day... so, enjoy life while you can.

i think you should just grind it out. im in college also and i personally dont like it that much, but im thinking for the future. my suggestion is that you finish your years in college and it will enventually pay you back. if your having problems with the family you should try to handle it to the best of your ability. if it doesnt work out you could still go to school and live at a dorm. and trust me you could still have lots of fun and still go to school.
hope you make the right decision!

i'm in the same spot, going to a community college, working at a crappy job, basically hating my life right now. But once i graduate i'll be able to get a decent job and start working then start having my fun. Community college is cheap and college is not worth getting in debt over, get a degree then get out there and get a job, find something you like that you can earn a decent salary, dont get down, just look forward to weekends and blazing, stay focused on school and work and in the end it will pay off

if your heart is not in the semester, you might not have a real good time keeping grades (you also indicated as such). Since you are going to make the decision I'll give my two cents on either course.
If you choose to stay in school, train your mind to not look at school as a stepping stone to something grander, but to look at it as a fun opportunity to enrich your mind and your awareness of others and their cultures. Make learning an activity that you consider not a requirement for a good grade, but a way to forget your problems and focus your mind for its own sake. Asking questions and making comments in class are good ways to make the course more personally valuable to you (not to mention helping your grade). I'd take a wide variety of classes so you can discover your niche. It's pointless to devote your life to a specific area only to find out you hate it. Continue puffing, but do it as a reward for finishing homework.
It's a good idea to take a break, too. But not to take it easy and sleep in. Get up relatively early, do activities of your choice, and especially try new things. You might find that something you do in your discretionary time might make you discover a passion that you want to focus on in school. I discovered that I wanted to study botany by having a hobby grow in my closet. If you do take a break, make solid memories because either way, you're young and in the best time of your life:jointsmile:

it seems like part of the reason you're miserable is because you're allowing yourself to be. you can get a different job, like a server or some other well paying job so you don't drain yourself. if your parent's house is stable and not psychologically draining, stay there. you'll be able to save money so that you can eventually support yourself. and stay in school. a college degree is pretty much a requirement today. and if you're miserable with your school career, why don't you start taking courses that interest you?

do what feels right man.
life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets ,so love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't, and believe that everything happens for a reason. if you get a chance , take it. if it changes your life, let it. nobody said that it'd be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
