The debate over 18/6 or 24/0 will probably never end. There are proponents of both and pros and cons to each. My friend always used 24 and loved it, while many others like the 18/6. I would say just pick one, and stick with it.
You will want to wait until your plant has at least sexually matured before flowering. You may have visible preflowers or alternating nodes which would tell you it is mature. Other than that, size and shape of the plant will also be determining factors on when you decide to flower.

firstyou can pre-sex a plant almost anytime after the first set of true leaves come out, as soon as they show sex and you get rid of the males just revert back to your veg cycle.
now when i grow clones or seed i use the 18/6 but thats just to save a little on the power bill
any light can be used either hid or flouresents. im old shool so i prefere hid
as far as how close, as close as possibe without burning the plants. put your hand on top of the plant and if you get burned then your to close. you can put flourecents almost right on top of the plant but hid needs a little space.

i actually had been using 24/0 for weeks and my plants growth was stunted..i recently switch to 18.6 and in the past 2 days my roots already come out of the bottom of the pot and my leaves now how rapid growth..and finally my preflowers came in:thumbsup:

i use 20/4 personally. clones will grow under same methods as the mother. the ligt distance is gonna depend on the bulb.

I use 24/0, but I do find that your bulbs (I use metal halide) burn up quicker than with 18/6.

thats why i used 20/4. even w/ cfls,it lets them cool a bit. (i also had a 15min brak at midday for cool-down)
