Check for a button or the menu on your camera for a macro setting , that should change the focal point for better close-ups.

try with the flash on, or directly under a really bright light with the flash on. If you've got a 5.0 megapixel camera, you should be able to take pictures way better than that. A lot of digital cameras have a knob/switch at top to change settings, you should at least have a close-up or portrait mode.
