After waiting 3 weeks I just received my ph tester but they didn't ship me any buffer solution and since I'm new to this I didn't even know you needed it. My question is which buffer solution is best. My tester states there are 3 kinds, #4, #7 and #10 which I have no idea what the difference is. I have to order this so I'm hoping someone can give me their input on what is best.

First you need to know what your calibration points are- some meters are single point, better use all three.

If you're only going to be working w/ solutions in the 5-7.5 range, you only need the 4 and the 7. Doesn't matter if the meter's accurate @ 10+, cause you'll never go there.

Check the documentation for your tester like Rhizome said. Depending on the tester, you may only need one calibration solution, or, you may need all 3. If it takes all 3, I would definitely use all 3.

It states to select ph 7 buffer for general testing or ph 4 or 10 if I'm measuring acidic/basic samples. Theres only one calibration point and it's made by Eutech/Oakton and it's a waterproof phtestr-1 I'm using an ebb/flow system so what buffer solution do I need? I sorry but I know jack about all this and I'm learnig from this forum.

Can you store buffer solution in an air tight bottle to re-use it over again? I got some in a foil package but am not sure if its re-usable...

Once it's been used and contaminated it's best to throw it out .
They sell like 8 oz. bottles of it pretty cheap .

But it thought you have to calibrate every 3 times? That means i need to stock up on 8 oz bottles? throw them out after one use?

Hell no bro.
Im so tight I squeak . I pour a tiny ass lil bit in the corner of a sandwich baggy and stick the meter in the baggie . Don't go and contaminate the whole bottle for 1 test .

LOL - I put mine in a pill bottle that just fits my probe ...I'd hate to waste a baggie. :D

Pinner - you don't need to calibrate every third use. Every two weeks would be pretty anal.

My first pH meter took a shit after about four months. So I bought a better meter and always use storage solution (I put it in the cap). There is also an electrode cleaning solution you should use occasionally.
