I'd like to start a thread devoted to spiritual inspiration.

Feel free to post quotes by others or yourself, but I'd like to ask that no one starts or holds debates in here.

That said, here are a few quotes I'd like to start with:

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us the "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts, and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." - Albert Einstein

"Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside."
...
"That inner Self, as the primeval Spirit, Eternal, ever effulgent, full and infinite Bliss, Single, indivisible, whole and living, Shines in everyone as the witnessing awareness. That self in its splendour, shining in the cavity of the heart. This self is neither born nor dies, Neither grows nor decays, Nor does it suffer any change. When a pot is broken, the space within it is not, And similarly, when the body dies the Self in it remains eternal."
...
"Your own Self-Realization is the greatest service you can render the world." - Ramana Maharshi

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." - Dalai Lama

"The Kingdom of Heaven is inside you and it is outside you.
Split a piece of wood, and I am there.
Lift up the stone and there you will find me." - Jesus of Nazareth

"You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection." - Buddha

existence only matters as much as we make it matter, for if we did not think it mattered, it would never matter.

paraphrased:
nothing that ever has happened, ever could happen, and ever will happen has any meaning more than we mentally and emotionally assign it.

the genocide of the jews is of no more consequence than blowing one's nose; apart from the meaning(s) we assign these events, as we, as humans, have no control or power over true meaning. our emotions drive the purpose of the universe in our "own little worlds".

If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished!

"Teamwork is essential -- it allows you to blame someone else.".

Free time which unexpectedly becomes available will be wasted.

There are two things on earth that are universal: hydrogen and stupidity.

Science is not a sacred cow. Science is a horse. Don't worship it. Feed it.

There is nothing so habit-forming as money.

Security depends not so much upon how much you have as upon how much you can do without.

The trouble with doing right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was!

Here are three excellent quotes I came across:

"Life is so meaningless we might as well try to make ourselves extraordinary." â??Francis Bacon

"The trick is to assume your life is going to work out. Of course, it never does, so you do the next best thing: you take it one disaster at a time." â??Fisher Stevens, in Early Edition

"If you donâ??t control your mind, someone else will." â??John Allston

not really along the lines of what other people were posting, but I did see a post with verse in it.. anyways, Psalm 23 has always been real meaningful to me

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
