I'm playing with the idea of possibly starting a first grow. I live in an apartment complex where rules are tight. I don't doubt I can be discrete as far as visually hiding a plant or two, but what about the smell? Do marijuana plants give off a strong, obvious scent? Do carbon filters really help with the odor at all?

It all depends on what kind of strain you have. Some give more odor than others and as far as the carbon filter I cant tell you becuase im not worried about the smell when I grow so I dont use any of that...I live in my own house with no neighbors really.

Like Burn said it depends on the strain. I have some bagseed plants that are 11 weeks old and i can hardly smell them so far. 1 or 2 plants shouldnt be a problem for you. Just be super careful in an apartment growing cause other people have access to your place.

yes the right carbon filter will filter out all smell as i said the right 1 being it's the right size for the room and the right fan blowing it to much fan and it blows to fast not gonna work so yes all smells some more than others i made my own carbon filter and it only cost me 50bucks to make and u also need to know what kindda filter u want a filter that will pump the clean air out to somewhere i.e outside or 1 that recirculates it back into the room the first option the carbon should last about a year or up to a year and the 2nd option lasts about 6 months as it's doing double the work hope this helps

Before the borg hit (they are gone now) I had a C-99 that smelled exactly like pink grapefruit! Even my non-toking sons agreed that it smelled like sticking your nose into a bag of grapefruit. Get some and tell everyone you're on a grapefruit diet! ;) - Granny:hippy:

Hahaha thats awesome, Granny, we should all have that strategy :) I use a carbon filter and it works great. Just make sure you get a filtering unit that is appropriate for the size of your grow op. Good luck!

One of the strains I regularly grow stinks up my entire house. As soon as you walk in the door, you know there is pot growing somewhere, and thats just during the veg stage, flowering gets worse and skunkier. Then again, my most recent plant, a Northern Lights, had you came in while it was going you would have never known it was there unless I told you. Same way with California Orange I did, it smelled almost like dryer sheets during early flower so my house smelled real good for that time.

Yes they do smell. If you are going to grow in a apartment do get a carbon scrubber and invest in a air tiger its a portable ozone genarator. Run it for about 10 to 15 minutes three times a day in a separate room and it will kill any smell in the apartment. I have one the very first one i bought was 149.00 and I started growing in a apartment. You can control odors in a apartment you just have to be smart about it. I wouldnt grow no more than 2 plants at a time when flowering so keep one mother plant and flower only 2. That you will always have clone stock.:rasta::rastasmoke::pimp:

I've decided on C-99, or at least some derivative of it. From what I've read, in all regards, sounds exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks again for the tip.
