I have a 93 Toyota Tercell with 180,000 miles.

Everytime I slow down to 2mph or to a stop, my engine idles and the check engine light goes on- I have to put my car in park and keep my foot lightly on the gas pedal at stoplights to keep it from turning off completely.

I have an appt. tommorw at a local auto shop, but I know there are some gearheads on here who might be able to tell me what might be going on with my baby- price estimates, anyone?

is it fuel injected or carb'd?
Almost sounds like the symptoms of a dirty carbeurator.. but then again I'm a girl, lol....

Fuel injected

well i may be talking out my ass but you're not getting fuel introduced properly into your system... hmmm have you run some fuel injector cleaner through it yet?

I have no clue. My dad's the auto guru, he usually knows what it is, but he's at work, and the place I go to is REALLY honest, and if it's a DIY thing, they don't charge.

could be fuel pump, just an idea.

Anyone have any cost estimates for fuel injector/fuel pump? I get my paycheck this week, and I'm debating on whether or not getting a new used car for 2 grand or less... I love my baby and don't want to let her go, but if it's mind-blowing expensive...

It has something to do with the fuel pump..and that is about all I can tell you..I had a 91 tercel and I got 275,000 miles out of it b4 I traded it in, they still gave me 500 bills for it..I should of kept it though..I am sure I could of topped 300,000

I'm thinking by how it's been acting, it's just dirty- yesterday I foolishly let my gas go down to about .8 gallons left in my 12 gallon tank, then filled it right up- I think that might have triggered it, maybe some crap got into the injector. We'll see, though. This is really helping, all of ya :)

When I called the place I usually go to, the guy was like "OH, you're the one with the tie-dye seat covers, the CDs on the ceiling of your car and all them hippie stickers? I'll throw ya a 20% discount 'cause I like yer car"

I love mom and pop auto stores...

Entirely possible. I suspect if it were the pump, you would not be able to run it at all... if you can still open the throttle and get it to run, the pump is working.

what revs are you hitting when idleticking over? should be about 900.might just need a slight turn of a screw.when driveing at normal speeds what does it run like? as you said you was very near empty could be a small bit of shit causeing you the problem.

Purple Banana
06-04-2007, 05:14 PM
Normal speeds, it just makes a bit of noise (my exhaust has a hole in it, and my brother's gonna repair it for me) maybe a bit of rattling, but she's an older car- and with the RPM, I don't know, my car doesn't display RPM :P

I will cast my diagnosis..
it is a dirty fuel filter
and it needs to be changed..

Sounds like your fuel injectors possibly.

Do you have an automatic or a manual??

Try getting your fuel injectors cleaned first...if that doesn't work..probably is time for new ones.

Just my guess. But what do I know...

TallulahGreen
06-04-2007, 05:35 PM
Oh and they are going to be around 200-300$ for new ones..

..and they should last you awhile.

Purple Banana
06-04-2007, 05:55 PM
:p

If that is what I think it is, that's a huge relief- I was figuring around 5-600 bucks, but 2-300 doesn't sound bad at all, if they DO need to be replaced.

I WILL AWARD A PRIZE!

Try running Lucas fuel injection cleaner through your fuel system that stuff works great. you can find it at most auto part stores..

Also check your air cleaner/filter. look/listen for any loose vacuum hoses that could be leaking.. or it could be a simple clogged fuel filter...

good luck and keep us posted...

Might be a bad sensor for the EGR and it is open when it needs to be shut,,,or a piece of crap is lodged in it keeping it slightly open...

Skink
06-05-2007, 04:12 AM
Dont do fuel injector cleaner if it's not used to it,,,you will dislodge every piece of crap in you gas tank and line and def clog the injectors... if it is dirty injectors let the gas station clean them...

if you can hold off,,,post what the gas station says to you and run it by us...

yeah sounds like fuel injectors to me get some injector cleaner at any auto parts store if this does not work you might need new injectors or it could be something else if it is not the injectors i would replace the fuel filter and check the sparkplugs and if there is carbon deposit bridging the gap between the electrodes then replace sparkplugs

Again I say if you don't use cleaners on a regular basis you can cause havoc...

could be the timing
could be a fuel problem
could even be an airflow problem.

if it doesn't backfire i'd put improper spark plug gapping outta the question.

slipknotpsycho
06-05-2007, 04:34 AM
wow i just read over the posts, i can't believe NO ONE said timing :stoned: that's one of the leading causes improper idling... x.x

which made me wonder another question...

when was the last time it was worked on? timiing usually doesn't just go out on it's own... but even heavy jarring CAN move the distrubutor cap which plays a major role in timing (and timing is everything to an engine, improper timing can do everything from iradditc idling to rendering the engine completely useless unless adjusted back to it's proper setting)

Skink
06-05-2007, 04:39 AM
Yeah when was the last timing belt done??? if it slipped you may have a prob there... just incase take it real easy till you get to the repair shop...

slipknotpsycho
06-05-2007, 04:44 AM
i wouldn't just question last timing belt/chain.. but even last work on the engine she didn't over-see...

never know what those mechanics do by accident, or on purpose to get you back.....

yup,,,thats why I said to run it by use before she gets the work done... a car is not going to go out of time by itself...

i never knew shit about cars really unti li got my own broken down POS some tools and the book....i made that car run again, after 3 years of setting up and knowing absolutely nothing nad having no help from anyone...

if i can learn, anyoen can <.< saves alot of moeny too... if i got paid the same rate mechanics do, i would of made over 5k on that car... only put in 1-2k or so including buying all the parts AND TOOLS....

i suggest anyoen with any time on their hands buy the book and start fixing hteir own cars, it does take an initial investment of tools but goddamn, you save a shitload (And can save your friends shit loads too) it's not that hard....

i eventually fucked the car up again by over looking something.... i grounded the check engine lights to check for problems while the car was on, which shorts out the computer and can short out any electronics in the car... =/ i felt so stupid after that, i had a pefectly working car and made it screwed again... didn't have the money to go through fixing it again, and then wife got hit by the car, and we wound up with no money so i had to sell it..

it hurt too, cuz by that time that car had become a part of me.... i felt as if i was giving up on a child... but we needed the money

::drumroll::

It was the fuel injection, and he fixed my loose exhaust pipe while he was at it...

Timing belt was replaced a year ago.

It was supposed to be $318, but he told me if I paid in cash and got him a coffee, he'd knock it down to $240.

I love Italians...

When I got there this morning, I was standing at the front door of the shop, waiting for it to open, and he exclaimed "What the fuck ah you doin' heah at 8 am?"

Later when one of his employers was talking on a cell, the employee said "Shut the hell up" into the phone, and the owner replies "Watch ya fuckin' mouth, we gots a lady heah!"

Haha I love this guy...

My baby runs like a dream, now! He said it's in excellent condition- wouldn't be surprised if I got up to 250,000 on it...

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP!

EDIT: I am sending 2 ounces of Alaskan Thunderfuck to the winner. You'll know who you are when you recieve it. :stoned:

I'm having car trouble too... in the coolant...

I have a 94 honda accord with 150,00 miles, I was driving home and my check engine light came on... I look at the engine temp,, and my motor is just cookin'... smokin' hot...all the way up..

Thank god I was close to my home...Popped the hood...coolant dripping.. The radiator blew.. Thank god no other damage was made to the motor itself.

I can install a new radiator myself for about 50$ shipped on ebay for my model...needs oil too..

The honda has been good too me I just need to start treating her right...

Yes Banana definitely keep using this shop, and steer friends there too. Don't wanna end up losing him to the fuckin big name shops. All those little mom and pop shops are like that, when we had our jetta the shop we took it to the owner was happy to see one of it's age in such nice shape he gave us discounts (also he was the only one with reasonable prices so we went there). Good to hear the car is running good, the jetta we had had 234,000 miles on it and then my brother and I got t-boned by a bitch in her suv who was most likely talking on her damn phone and totaled it :( (don't talk on the phone and drive please!) We're lucky, had we been 2 feet further into the intersection she would've slammed right into my brother's door and things could have been very bad. (she was doin ~40 mph when she hit us, she ran a stop sign)

don't understand,,,why did it blo???

Probably had a minor leak in it already and the driving made it get worse from the pressure build up and it just finally gave on him.

Glad to hear your car is OK.
Although, it is a toyota tercel. deep deep down inside me i was hoping it would be junked and you would be forced to buy a car with more than 60 horsepower and an engine that does NOT sound like an R/C car.
Haha im just kidding, shit, it saves you money on gas AND repairs, and rapes any american car in terms of reliability and durability, have you ever heard of an american car getting 150k+ miles without pooping out on you? shit, late model fords cannot even go 25k without having the tranny fuck up...
Kudos.
