Huge twister hammers Kansas town
POSTED: 0952 GMT (1752 HKT), May 5, 2007

(CNN) -- A half-mile wide tornado swept through downtown Greensburg, Kansas, causing heavy damage and injuring dozens of residents, according to officials and witnesses.

"The entire town was pretty much wiped out," said storm chaser Allan Detrich. "There wasn't too many buildings standing."

Kiowa County Memorial Hospital was "partially collapsed" with people still trapped inside early Saturday, according to Kansas Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Sharon Watson. (Watch another tornado touch down in Oklahoma Video)

A search team from Sedgewick, Kansas, that specializes in rescues from collapsed buildings was called in to help, she said.

About 75 percent of Greensburg was either destroyed or heavily damaged, Watson said.

At least 40 people who were injured by the storm in Greensburg were driven 50 miles east to Pratt Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to spokeswoman Kim Stivers.

The less severely injured are lining the hallways and lobby, while the more seriously hurt are being treated in the emergency room, Stivers said. Some patients are being sent on to Wichita hospitals from there, she said.

Detrich, who was able to enter Greensburg soon after the twister passed through, said the small town was flattened.

"People were walking down the street like something out of a horror flick, a zombie movie," Detrich said.

Storm chaser Marty Logan, who took a dramatic photo of a tornado backlit by a burst of lightning south of Greensburg, estimated that it was at least a half-mile wide. Two smaller tornados were following to the right of the larger twister as they swept northward into Greensburg, he said.

The American Red Cross was using school and charter buses to transport hundreds of Greensburg residents about 10 miles east to shelters opened in Haviland, Kansas, at a high school and a college, Watson said.

The Kansas National Guard has dispatched 40 troops to Greensburg to help with security, she said.

Hazardous materials teams have also been sent into Greensburg to look at several overturned rail cars, she said.

The National Weather Service reported a tornado struck Greensburg at about 9:30 p.m. Friday. Greensburg has a population of fewer than 2,000 people.

Also on Friday, The Associated Press reported that three small tornadoes touched down in rural southwestern Illinois and two tornadoes hit in Oklahoma.

I was here just the nite before last....My main refueling stop is in Greensburg!!

Oh hell no. There was a Halloween concert including Tub Ring and Mindless Self Indulgence up in Toledo on October 28th, 2006 (I live in Cincinnati). I drove up there with my best friend (It was her first time smoking that day too, really awesome time).

On the way up, a fucking tornado starts forming RIGHT OVER TOP OF ME. The clouds started swirling and coming down around me and it was hailing like crazy. I was scared as shit and pulled into an inn off the next exit, as soon as I parked it went away and got sunny :wtf:

i'm actually starting to FEAR living in the US... ever couple of months (atleast since katrina) is some HUGE devastating storm (i've been watching the news for over 5 years now, isn't just i started noticing past katrina... it wasn't like this before..)

hurricane season is coming again... katrina barely missed us, rita LITERALLY turned from us at THE LAST SECOND (unfortunately it turned to an already devestated area)

i have a sneaking suspicion in 20 or so years, the coast line everyone now knows as the gulf, will be ravenged and flooded.. changing the entire gulf coastline of the us (and mexico) as we know it...

lip, can me the wife and the baby board with you? we'll be coming in diffrent transportation tho, cuz i'm scared as shit of planes, and the wife shares an equal ammount of fear of boats...

Yeah, but no one was killed and how often does it happen? As far as Tornados, hirrcanes, and earthquakes go we're pretty damn safe.

Yeah, but no one was killed and how often does it happen? As far as Tornados, hirrcanes, and earthquakes go we're pretty damn safe. Britan does actually have more tornadoes per square mile than any other country. Obviously their not as powerful as the ones you'll find in Oklahoma or Kansas.

i'm nearly in th same boat but i live in texas... and the drive is more like 30-45 mins (but we got PLENTY of places to flood... shit we get severe (hurricane level) flooding, even where there's not a hurricane...)

matter of fact, a few years back, my uncle was on his way home durring a major ass flood we had (it was made popular by the hospital that flooded, there was even a movie about it) and was sitting on the overpass, looking down at 18 WHEELERS COMPLETELY SUBMERGED IN WATER.... no shit either...

I drive a fair sized truck, delivering Windsheilds and Exaust Systems all over Southwestern Kansas. I drove thru Macksville Ks yesterday (One of the towns hit by the Greensburg tornado) big trees thrown around like matchsticks, grain silos in the highway, bad flooding in town, three feet of water covering the highway, flattend buildings...Needless to say the place looked like a war zone!
They still havent opened US Highway 54/400 thru Greensburg,When they do I'll post some pics! (I have my camera in my truck)

I've seen hail the size of baseballs,Downpours that would put out the fires of Hell,Funnel Clouds, Flash Floods, Lightning that was amazing!!

These are to be Feared!!!
