Hey Josh,,,I am looking into the Philippines as a place to retire... We Americans can buy a condo there and get perm residence visa with a condo purchase... Give me some names of decent town/cities to start looking for a condo... I don't want like a hi rise in Manila,,,more like a townhouse or apartment condo with civilazation and stores around...

whats it like if I get caught with pot or growing it being a US national???

Thanks for any info...

Awesome! Ok well not too uncivilized but not too big city hmm...
If your looking to grow stay away from places like Makati their pretty tight there.
I live in Quezon City, its not such a "big city" but its where it's at! Well actually there aren't really "Big cities" here.

(but dont have the wrong idea, we DONT live in trees! hahaha, and out cities are pretty much as civilized as most of the states.)

Well if your foreign, no one will really mess with you legal-wise. And if you get caught it's either a slap on the wrist,
or you can just slip em a few bucks..
Don't live in the provinces either cuz well i duno, unless your into that kinda thing.
Just stay near manila, that's all ya have to do! Metro Manila is where its all at. there are a lotta non-highrise places around here.
Good-luck! Oh yeah, and you might have a hard time finding dealers at first, so you might need someone like me around..;)

remember, the deals here are the bomb! :rasta:

Thanks...

Actually I was looking at info about Quezon City... I really don't want to be in Manila from what I can see... Does it flood there a lot??? I like that you can slip a cop a few bucks,,,that is the way it should be everywhere...

I am really thinking hard about this... Do you know any US peeps???

is it hard to get a drivers license or can those be bought too???

Skink, that would be the place to go. Get the hell out of America, move to the Phillipines and get you a nice filipino lady to live with you. She will take care of your every need, I am not saying that to be a chavinist, it is just the truth. Whats wrong with it? Absolutely nothing.:stoned:

When are you moving?

Yes i know many "US" people! Hahaha, my dad is one and so is are some of my family members. ;)
Drivers licence YES you actually can buy these. Or you can just get one like normal people!
You hardly even need to do a damn drivers test.

Ok manila is different from "metro manila" quezon city is in metro manila. And no it doesnt flood.
You can find MANY places in metro manila where you can get cheap condos or apartments.
Pasig City is also a great place, pretty near Quezon. Katipunan, Cubao, the list goes on!

Ok here are places pretty far from Metro Manila but are still descent. Baguio City, one of the chilliest cities in the Philippines.
Probably not for you guys tho, nowhere close to snowing haha! Its up near the mountains.

BOTTOM LINE, stay in a nice small city like Quezon or Pasig, people are nice, civillized and overall.. a great great place!
Plus if you move anytime soon and im not paranoid that your gonna kill me or something like that, id be happy to see you! :)

goodluck!

Oh BTW. Stay away from makati. Not THATS a highrise kinda place. It would be the business capital of the philippines.
Also, they're much stricter there. And the weed sucks.

Now the best weed comes from BAGUIO CITY! But i dont recomend living there that much. Like i sed, Quezon and Pasig!
Oh yes, other great cities include Greenhills, San Juan (a lotta squatters there), and Marikina (lotta weed there!).
Most of the weed comes from Baguio anyway, so just dont live there hahaha!

Citing threats of kidnapping and terrorism, the United States government issued a new travel advisory over the weekend, warning citizens not to go to Sulu and Mindanao.

In its new travel advisory dated Saturday, the US Embassy said the threat in Mindanao is such that US government employees must seek permission for travel to Mindanao or Sulu.

â??Many people who reside in or visit areas that face terrorist threats, such as in Mindanao, travel with their own security force, avoid an obvious presence, or both. In some areas of the Philippines, especially in Mindanao, visitors should avoid travel at night outside metropolitan areas," it said in its advisory.

"US Government employees must seek special permission for travel to Mindanao or the Sulu Archipelago. When traveling in Mindanao, U.S. official travelers attempt to lower their profile, limit their length of stay, and exercise extreme caution," the advisory added.

Also, it said US citizens contemplating travel to the Philippines should carefully consider the risks to their safety and security while there, including those due to terrorism.

It advised them to â??exercise extreme caution" in both central and western Mindanao as well as in the Sulu Archipelago.

The US advisory said kidnap-for-ransom gangs continue to operate in the Philippines, abducting two US children last January their home in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte.

Haha! Yeah dont worry about the so-called "terrorism"
First of all, you shouldnt live in SULU or Mindanao not cuz of the terrorism, its just a NOT FUN place.

Hehehehe! I have a German friend who lives in Mindanao now tho, and she's alright.
Anyway, i hope you seriously consider what ive sed Skink! You wont regret it!

Hey Josh I am seriuos... Thanks for all the info I am off to check out the places you suggested... Of course online I am only going to find the expensive real estate... The law states that a person 39 to 49 has to invest 50,000USD to get a retirement Visa and a condo counts as an investment... I can invest it in any type of business also... Age 50 and beyond the amount is dropped to 20,000...

Well i hope you make it over here! And its easy to find cheap places here.
You can stay in a hotel for a few days, while you look for some apartments.

I dont think you'll find this in the net, but there are these great townhouses near where i live.
And yes, Filipino chics are cute.
Btw, when are you planning on coming over?

I will be 50 in November so I am thinking early next year...

Reading up on getting a drivers license I read that one must have an Embassy from the country they come from in order to get a license... We do of course,,,but I am wondering if my suspension here would affect my ability to get them there???

Are you sure I can buy a license???

Hey thanks so much for the info,,,I wonder if we have any others here from your country???

Townhouse may not be good because we are not allowed to own land... If I marry a native she and I could own it,,, but I am restricted to 49%... The reason we can buy a condo is because we do not own the land ,,,just the space...

is there any other forums that you know of the will help my quest???

josh g
05-03-2007, 02:28 PM
Yes you can buy a license, well if thats what you call it. Just dont worry about the licence, thats practically taken care of.
Wait you just want to drive right?
Darnit you dont even NEED to get a Philippine licence here to drive!
Every time you get caught, show your american licence (or maybe even an ID) and say you just moved here, SORRY!

You can also give em 300 pesos and your done! (about 6 dollars)
