make it legal

I always think about how one of the reasons weed (and all drugs for that matter) should be is freedom of choice, and that the government should let us do what we want as long as we don't hurt anyone else.
I also thought about how it is the law to wear a seatbelt and if you are caught without one, you get ticketed or fined or whatnot. I realized that this is almost the exact same situation as with weed. The only person who is hurt by someone not wearing a seatbelt, in the majority of situations, is the person not wearing one. Therefore, does the government have the right to make you wear a seatbelt if you don't want to? It's your body, your life. It can and has saved many lives, but is it the government's job to make it the law to wear one?
Though I always buckle up, and I think everyone should, I do not think the government should be the ones to tell me to do so. If I want to put my life at risk, it should be my choice.
What do you guys think?:hippy:

I agree, I should also add that we should be able to make our own choices regarding seatbelts BUT we have to make sure that children are buckled in, I believe the adult in the car should be responsible for that.

Well I see this from a couple of perspectives...
Yes, you only hurt yourself by not wearing a seat belt.
But ultimately if someone hurt in an accident is uninsured or underinsured medically, guess who ends up taking the brunt of it if they can't pay their medical bills?

Actually it's fucking irresponible not to wear a seatbelt. If you are sitting in the back you can fly into the person in front of you and kill them. Also, think about the emotional cost on friends and family. It takes like half a second to belt up, and traffic accidents are messy :)

I know here in Florida one thing that has become a recent issue is the city and state gov being in bed with the auto insurance companies. I think it should be a choice but I guess the only one choosing is our elected officials. I hate the government sometimes.

A neighbor of mine got his face smashed in a window because he didn't wear his seatbelt. 5 reconstructive surgeries later, he's starting to look like himself.....
So wear your seat belt!

I am by no means saying that people shouldn't or don't need to wear seatbelts. I just think it should be up to the person.

I see nothing wrong with promoting it, but fining people for it is stupid, I agree with you there.

Don't worry, notice how a lot of people are not responding to your post, but the few key words they happened to read. I agree, everyone should wear it, but no one should be fined.
I have to admit, i'm a bit stoned and only read this post because i saw 'seat belts, make it legal'. I was really confused for a second, wondering where the heck seat belts would be illegal :stoned:

I agree, it should be the persons decision.
I think it's good and bad that the U.S. Government makes laws like that.
I mean, at least they show an effort to make us believe that they care about our lives when the reality they care about money.
It's just funny, that the U.S. is the only country that has these laws. Other countries just let the people think for themselves. Then again, other countries have bigger things to worry about than seatbelts.
Also, I think that if they didn't have these lawss people would sue certain companies cause "they didn't know better".
In other words, the government is covering all their (and motor companies) bases.
In Florida a cop can't pull you over for you seatbelt but can give you a ticket(and will) on top of whatever the cop pulled you over for.

Seriously you guys, why does anyone even have to be told to wear a seatbelt? Strikes me as the old-can't happen-to-me syndrome. Do you really think for one second I'm not going to do absolutely every thing I can to increase my odds of survival or less injuries? I'm not worried about how I drive....but I sure worry about all the other lousy drivers on the road.

The job of the US goverment is to cut out all treats to the general pop. Weed is considered a treat because it impairs ur judgement and induces rebelion against the goverment because it opens minds.
Well, depends where you live. In Canada the government pays for the medical bills so if they can save money then I think they can make people wear them. Personally, I hate wearing them and I just got a ticket a while ago. My third seatbelt ticket in my life; one was 20 years ago.
