water filled pipes?

So I was at the local head shop/ record store checkin out the pipes and I saw a water filled pipe. I remember someone told me whats so special about them but I forgot (probably cause I was stoned). I didnt want to ask the people working cause they are usually dicks about questions cause they think Ill try to say its for weed or something. Could someone please explain to me the purpose of a water filled pipe?

do you mean a bubbler? caus ethose have the same purpose as bongs, to filter out the impurities and leave you witha cleaner smoke

no not a bubbler.
water filled pipes are purely cosmetic, would be cool if you could put it in the freezer but that would break it.

put them in the fridge, not the freezer, and it is a nice, tasty cool smoke. also, they are very fun to look at while baked. they also tend to not heat up as much, due to the ease of heat transference from the water. one word of caution though, dont hold the lighter on the bowl too long, it heats up and can make pinging sounds and stuff, its bad juju.
