VEGGIE SEASON '07!! let's see them 'maters!
I have wanted to start a veggie/herb garden on my porch, but it gets fairly cold in my region during the winter so I am unsure they will survive. However any ideas on some that would survive send 'em my way as I will start that for shure.
Stay Fresh.

Good V....it's really not about what happens in the winter. I think pretty much, we all count on nothing growing outside during the winter (unless in a greenhouse). It's all about spring / summer / fall. Tomatoes, for instance, take about (correct me if I'm wrong) 90 days to bare fruit. So say the average last day of frost in your area is May 1st. You started your tomatoes indoors April 1st, you would be ready to put them in your planter (pot, container, etc) outside May 2nd. You would start getting fruit Mid July or so. Theortically this would continue through the first frost in Sept/Oct/Nov.

^ Cucumbers may be difficult on a balcony because they grow on vines that like to climb. However, if you provide them some sort of tressel, you could certainly pull it off. Kind of a neat challenge, actually.
DO IT! Then post pictures!

here's an idea; use the pickets and rails of the balcony as a trellace...

I've gotta little while before we can plant here. I'm just starting some flowers indoors this weekend....Actually an ornamental grass I've been dying to grow..gets to be 12-20 feet...yee-haw!
I'll be back once I start my tomatoes and peppers. I might do onions too, but I've never have tried...need to do more research. I'm gonna can this year.
