    Most overrated band?

I don't think Pink Floyd is overrated at all- they're not the best, but they put a lot of good stuff out. Simply put, many people equate them with Another Brick In The Wall, or Dark Side of the Moon.

The Syd Barrett era of Floyd, no matter how short-lived, had wonderful psychedelic music. Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Saucerful of Secrets are great psychedelic albums.

Most of the people (not all) who classify Floyd as overrated usually have only listened to Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall. In my opinion, those aren't the best albums... Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Echoes, and Animals have amazing guitar work. Have you heard many other artists like David Gilmour play with such clear-cut sound, and genuinely beautiful notes? He may not play speed guitar like some of the more modern nu metal bands, or even classic metal bands, but he uses very euphonic techniques. Instead of just playing a random list of semi-related songs, they use concept albums, which can have amazing potential.

I don't think the Beatles were VERY overrated, a lot of their original material was stifled by Phil Spector- Let It Be... Naked is a good example of the stuff they really wanted to put out. Not the best band in the world, but I really like their stuff.

As for jam bands, like Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band, their fanbase is mostly people who followed their shows for a good time, not just the music. Jam bands are more of a background kind of music for having a good time, not for people to claim 'they're the best band EVER.'

I think Elvis is definately overrated. He was more of an image who borrowed a lot of his riff structures and singing styles from early black American blues/jazz underground music, and made it feel more acceptable for white people to listen to.

    Most overrated band?

I've heard plenty of Pink Floyd to know that it's all over-hyped by the up-and-coming generations who burn their first joint to Dark Side of the Moon and think it's the best thing created. Oh my gosh are those bird noises? How trippy! Like I said, personally, they put me to sleep, and always have.

As for jam bands, I see what you're saying about some of the scene being full of "wookies" as they're so affectionately referred to. But I also must say that a lot of jam bands are amazingly talented. Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee is one of my favorite guitarists, and shreds his brains out night in and night out. Dude's stage presence is something special, that's for sure. Bands like Medeski Martin and Wood, Robert Randolph, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Yonder Mountain String Band DEFINITELY have serious talent.

But honestly, I've seen plenty of jam bands, and for the most part, the people that support their live music are some of the nicest people around. This is definitely true for bluegrass, which also is close to my heart, but still, jam bands still have their respectable audience and their not-so-respectable audience, just like any other genre really. ~

I know Piper at the gates of dawn and saucerful of secrets, and there allright albums, but when i say pink floyds overrated im talking about post Barrett. I still feel sorry for you though, if those are what you consider truly psychedelic albums. Sure there alot better than oh, say something like Wish You Were Here or Darkside.. those basicly just any other mainstream rock albums IMO. I would not by any stretch of the words call them great psychedelic albums though.

I agree completly. Floyd doesn't stimulate my mind.

Same with the jam bands too. They are the most talented of any players in the world in my opinion. I mean, you take 3 or 4 guys who have never played together before in their lives, pick the key of A, and they can play songs like no problem, in time, in key, and all improvised on the spot. They are very tanlented musicians.

I like Tool myself though. I find their last 3 albums or so to be really complicated to follow (from a musicians point of view). Their notes are always chaning, but it's the polyrythmic beats that are the most outstanding. The fretless bass guitarist is very talented too. I don't find his lyrics to be the most impressive part if if it either. It's the music itself.

So it's all about tastes really. Some like Tool, some like Floyd and Nirvana, so who cares.

How can you say The King is overrated?!? He is only the reason we listen to rock and roll today. Without him, we'd still be dancing to Lawrence Welk and his orchestra. Plus, the man could sing.

I do consider those psychedelic albums, maybe not THE most psychedelic I've ever heard, but just about anyone who's listened to Barrett-era Floyd agrees those two albums are psychedelic in some degree or another.

By great, I mean great in MY opinion, not 'great' as in they were good examples of psychedelic albums, but I enjoyed the two as a whole.

As for mainstream? I don't think those two were mainstream per say, they sold a crapload of albums, but everyone knows that's not a good indicator of music quality. I enjoy their music not only for the guitar, but the symbolism in each concept album. As someone who looks for symbolism every day in my field, their music is heavily laid with it. Some people might not like that. That's okay.

You gotta remember, music is completely different for everyone :stoned:
