Today I spoke with Jo Lynn, the representative from Green Power Switch, the company Al Gore buys his electricity from. I had called her a week ago and left a message that I wanted to buy a Green Power Switch Gift Certificate to buy Green Power for someone who lived in the Tennessee Valley Authority coverage area (Senator Inohofe, but I'll get to that later).

She took a week to call me back, so I guess business is brisk. As soon as she got on the phone I cut to the chase. Is it true I asked, what is written everywhere that Al Gore spends lavishly on your Green Power Switch electricity?

She laughed and said, I wouldn't call it lavish, exactly. He pays somewhere under $500 average a month for his electricity. I said, But that's not the thousands quoted by the FossilFool Attack Machine Main Stream Media. She said, Oh? Mih local paper covered it pretty accurately. What paper is that I asked? She told me it's The Tennessean.

I told her I was surprised that his bill was so low, considering the huge numbers bandied about. She seemed to think this was just silliness.

She told me that her local paper, The Tennessean, had investigated the smear and has satisfied its readers that rumours of his profligacy were indeed unfounded and she is right:

...Electric bills obtained by The Tennessean, however, showed that Gore is paying a premium on his bills to be part of the "green power" program. Gore purchased 108 blocks of "green power" for at least each of the last three months, according to a summary of bills from Nashville Electric Service.

Thatâ??s a total of $432 a month spent to pay extra for solar or other renewable energy sources. NES power â?? outside this program - is derived largely from coal, which emits carbon, a green house gas.

I asked her how the Green Power Switch works, did he buy any dirty power? Was the $434 just the green sort of "extra" part of his bill? Was there a regular bill too?

No, she told me his entire bill is for Green Power exclusively, and its $400 something average. She said that that is unusual. Most people pay the regluar bill and buy just a little extra per month, most $20 or less extra per month to help grow the Green Power business, but Al Gore buys only the Green Power, his bill is entirely made up of the $4 units of Green Power.

Of course as she pointed out to me " of course, we can't tell those electrons where to go" so even though he pays for exclusively Green Power, the Green Power gets muddied in with the dirty power in the transmission lines.

So theres the real shocker folks right there!

Jo Lynn told me that when they started Green Power Switch in 2000, they had "only 3 Wind Turbines and a handfull of Solar".

Thanks to Al Gore, and customers like him, they now have "18 Wind Turbines and 16 Solar Installations" providing Green Power to residents in 4 states. She pointed out that "ironicly some of the Wind turbines are out on reclaimed coal mining operations that had got closed down for being environmental catastrophes."

So if you are curious about the truth, try calling the source yourself, and just ask. I hope I don't get her in trouble because she was a nice lady, and theirs is a nice business. I wish them well.

Al Gore chose to buy his electricity exclusively from the Green Power Switch. This has helped grow green energy in Tennessee 500% in 6 years. Thats really the headline.

So what's the deal, none of you right wingers have anything to say about this? you were certainly eager to smack down old Al when the republican smear campaign was in full bloom, I guess you are all hanging your heads in shame ~LOL~.

According to the AP (not the conservative think tank that originally broke this story), Goreâ??s electricity bill averaged $1200 a month last year, while using 191,000 kilowatt-hours. (Compared to an average Nashville household usage of 15,600 kwh.) That comes to $14,400 in electricity expenses, which is around 7.5 cents a kilowatt-hour.

So I tooled over to the Nashville Electric Service, Alâ??s power company. Al (says he) subscribes to â??Green Power Switchâ??, the renewable option offered by NES. (Seems like a good program, btw.) Green Power Switch will sell you 150 kilowatt-hour blocks of power for an extra $4 charge - adding 2.67 cents per kwh to the ordinary 7.38 cents that NES charges residential customers. Thatâ??s 10.05 cents per kilowatt-hour.

But the figures from Goreâ??s power bill, reported by the AP, show Gore paying about 7.5 cents a kilowatt-hour - pretty much exactly what heâ??d be paying if he bought his juice from the big coal-fired plant up the road. Something doesnâ??t add up, here.

Either Gore is not, in fact, buying green power, or the AP has badly misreported his power usage over the last year, or perhaps there are special sweetheart deals available for â??residentialâ?� customers who order enough juice to light up Versailles. Or - and please forgive the cynicism - Gore is buying a teeny weeny bit of green power - perhaps enough to account for the 0.12 cents per kwh disparity in the posted rate and his actual bill - and the rest of his â??green powerâ?� offset is coming in the form of â??investmentsâ?� in various renewable energy companies. Which is all well and good, of course, but which is a far cry from having all your power be renewable, which is apparently the claim being made.

Well no link per-se but the site is the Daily Kos. com and this is a couple a days old so this site moves right along. there is so much to not like about this administration. I thought I hated them but this site is even more hard core than I am. I suppose if you think it is bullshit, you could contact the Tennesseen Newspaper and ask them. I'm just the kind of guy that believes most of what Al has to say, call me gullible, but in this case it makes sense that an influential person like Al, wouldn't leave himself open to this kind of ridicule, I mean, he did the gentlemanly (Chickenshit) thing when he conceded to that thieving SOB Bush and let him steal the election. Even though I'm basically a pasifist, I'd of fought harder than him. I'm pretty fed up with the spineless Democratic party. If I didn't despise the Thieving republicans so much, I'd consider changing, at least they stick together, even when they are dead wrong!

I don't know your site so I can't really say one way or the other regarding the story. I've done numerous google searches since seeing this thread trying to find his response to the charges or more organizations/news media confirming it but I haven't found jack. As you know, google handles the Tenn. papers along with others with quite the history log.

Part of the "green energy" thing is paying more to buy into windmills, solar, plant a tree, etc........ I can't see where it's reducing carbon emmissions. IF there's more to this....enlighten me.:thumbsup:

We have to understand Gore isn’t like us, he is a multi-millionaire and he’s living like every other m-m. ie in lavish excess

When we talk about his power consumption should we be comparing it to the average? Or to his peers?

When we talk about the Jo average American we don’t compare his consumption to Arpad poor starving person from India.

It’s kinda the same thing, but then again it’s like Jo average ridiculing Arpad for his over consumption.

It's kind of hard to reduce carbon emissions when every second 10-30 third world citizens (China etc) are buying more carbon emiting devices, IE. automobiles, electric appliances, motorcycles and motor boats, luxuries they couldn't afford untill Wallmart and the job importers came to their part of the world. If we completely quit driving in this country, within 5 years at the current expansion rate of third world consumption, the pollution would be at the same level as today. It's kind of a catch 22. We are becoming aware of the impact and the rest of the world is becoming aware of the benefits of carbon based luxuries. What are the answers? Certainly not baseless arguements about Al gores electrical consumption!
