Ive installed and serviced fire alarms, if you post a picture of it I maybe able to tell you better what too do. The most common one only detect the heat in the smoke, not the smoke itself. So unless you have a room full of smokers with no ventilation you should be ok. Second type uses a type of photo sensor where the smoke particles can block a small laser and trigger it off. However these more often then not will set off a false alarm from my personal experience if there not up-kept properly.

They are extra sensitive at the university i am, there was a big fire many years back. Ive heard even to much hair spray can set them off and burnt popcorn does it easy.
