I'd choose sober, too, but in the old-fashioned meaning of the word. Right now, I'm sober AND staight, and have been so for a while - despite the impression that I may give sometimes.

I think that the usage of sober might have become blurred in the 1980's with the rising rate of cross-addictions, twelve-step programs, and phrases like, "clean and sober". What does being "clean" have to do with drugs and alcohol, anyway? There are plenty of well-scrubbed drunks and junkies. I'd think that being sober is good enough, and one should worry about hygiene after that is accomplished.
