Of course this "reparative therapy" stuff is full of malarkey. You can't turn gay people straight, but if you want to maintain that homosexuality is a sin, you have to ignore that inconvenient fact. Personally, I think these "ex-gay" people are fooling themselves. Maybe they've told themselves they're straight enough times that they've started to believe it, but in that case they're just bottling up a lot of sexual desire by flatly denying that it exists, and that can't be healthy.
