my nana has to have heart surgery

Best wishes to your Nana, MyMaryJane. I've met tons of people who've had open-heart surgeries. My husband's a cardiologist and he also assists with open-heart surgeries three days a week because they have so many patients requiring operations. (And because he likes the surgery assistant work as much as he likes the regular medical work, too.). If it helps you feel any better, the doctors who do that work know what they're doing, and while it's scary to think about their operating on frail heart disease patients in their 70s and 80s, those patients do amazingly well and live a lot longer because of that surgical intervention. Thoracic surgeons (chest surgeons) not only know what they're doing, they can do those procedures in record time. They pride themselves on speed and efficiency to keep people from having to be on the bypass machines, which pump blood in place of the heart while it's being operated on, for any longer than necessary.

Be nice to her once she's out of her surgery and don't make her laugh! (It'll hurt.) It looks like I have some open heart surgery to look forward to in my future to replace some valves that are in the process of being impaired from an infection I have. I dread it, but the one thing that keeps me feeling less nervous about that is the fact that those doctors who do that work tend to be the best in the business--and that patients, even very sick ones, come through those operations with flying colors seven days a week in hospitals all over the world.

my dad had that same problem. His arteries were 70% blocked and he had the cardiac catherization. He had open heart surgery after that and he's fine now. I hope your grandma's okay.

I am very sorry to hear that.

Let me tell you, though, that my Mom had to have open heart surgery, and this was just last Friday (3/2), and it went perfectly well. I was scared to death, and as I type this I am crying again, but she is fine now.

I know this won't help much, if at all, but I just wanted to add to the others who have shared good experiences with the surgery.

I will hold her and her doctors and your family in my prayers.

I visited her yest. and she still seems like herself just a little more tired and drained from tests being done at the hospital. she just wants to come home really bad, but obv cant for prob at least a week. i am really scared and upset. please pray for her. does anyone know anyone who has had open heart surgery before?? i'm hoping that nothing bad will go wrong during or after. im not sure about the success rates or god forbid if a number of patients pass away shortly after. i just hope they fix this shit and she stays alive and well for years. i might not be able to reply to this post for a while bc i have been busy, so thanks in advance for your support

Don't worry girl, she will be fine! This is a very common procedure that has a very high success rate, especially on people in good shape.

My grandpa had heart surgery 15 years ago and hes still goin' strong.

..and my dad had heart surgery a little over 2 years ago and hes doin' just fine too.

Your grandma will be fine, although she will have to take some time to recover, don't worry girl..everything will go smoothly.

Ill send ya some positive thoughts.

Try not too worry too much, although I know it's hard..I know how much you love your grandma because I lived with my grandpa almost my whole life too and she means the world to me.
