I hope we'll see it legal one of these days, but my guess is that Obama, with his candor about having used it and inhaled it frequently, is going to be less likely to help it become legal rather than more. I like him very much, too, and believe strongly in the legalization of cannabis. But I suspect that by aligning himself as pro-cannabis rather than trying to distance himself from his youthful past indiscretions, he'd be affirming what a lot of less-than-well-informed people tend to think anyway: "Aha! So he's still a stoner. I might have known, what with his background and his youth." I just think it'd be a political quicksand for him. It would have been for Dubya, too, for the same reasons. People thought he was a young, less-than-serious guy who partied too hard in his youth. He couldn't easily have been elected to the presidency and then tried to change attitudes and laws about any formerly illicit substance, particularly as a former frequent user of them.
