immigrants as a whole have built this country. illegal immigrants in specific have done little more than lower the standard of living, take advantage of the services this country has to offer, take over many of the jobs that our poorer citizens could have filled and thumbed their noses at the very system that has enabled them to escape poverty. far too many have arrived here and been infected by a culture of entitlement. convinced that this country owes them some sort of reparation they demand the same consideration as citizens even though their very presence in this country is illegal and a slap in the face to every immigrant who did what it takes to gain their citizenship through the proper channels.

is it selfish to want to protect the standard of living that generations have worked so hard to attain? yes, but a bit of enlightened self-interest is necessary. is it racist to attempt to stem the tide of illegal immigration? no, this is a matter of nationality and the survival of a way of life. those that try to make this a racial issue are merely attempting to confuse matters or are reflecting their own bigotry onto the situation. is there a place for immigrant labor here? of course, but an uncontrolled flow across the borders is both economically unfeasible and hazardous to our physical and cultural health.

a bit of your posting smacks of the reconquista attitudes of la raza and its ilk. i think that it's time to put aside the old animosities surrounding who conquered whom, who stole what and why the borders are where they are. that is all ancient history from times where military might was freely used to expand nations and ideologies. this is the modern world and we can't afford such concepts as manifest destiny or adventurous conquest. the real battles are to reform these other countries so that their citizens see no need to flee from them and to raise the standard of living on an international scale.
