    Starting to loose hope

I get so disapointed when i count the classic rock, punk rock, and yes even TOOL threads.
There are so many of these and everyones listening to their bands thinking that Pink Floyd is the definition of psychedelic rock. Anyone who likes them would love many of the bands i listen too, but you all have such thick skulls, imediatley dismissing any music that wasnt made in the 70's.
As for all you in the "punk rock", emo, indie, all those various rock genres are missing out on all the good stuff. Why dont you go download some Lightning Bolt or Brainiac. on another note, any of these Kurt Cobain is god people would shit their pants if they heard Smack Bunny Baby.
Fucking Tool, where to begin. there good, yes. there the only band that sounds like tool? NO!! Get off your ass and download some Slint and drop your jaw listening to spiderland. June of 44 is also loud 'brooding' music for all you guys.
GOD DAMN, there are so many rock genres and sub genres that most of you people dont even know about, it saddens me. Everyone that thinks there taste in music is so unique, when there just listening to the same albums from the same time period.
Do the words ShowGaze, Post-Rock, Avante Garde, Math Rock or Lo-Fi mean anything to you????

dont get me wrong, i respect a few peoples taste in music on these boards, but deffinatley not all of you.

sorry for the rant. someone had to do it.

I guess thats one way to see it sam, and i dont really have a response to that because it really dosent matter. It just bothers me on a fundemental level when people are talking about how origional all these bands are and they dont even bother to look at the roots of the music.

please i know your a tool fan, download Spiderland(1992) by Slint and tell me you dont like it. They got there eerie repetitave guitar riffs and their songs are structured similar to tools, especially stuff like Schism & 10,000 days, (the stuff that starts off soft then builds up over 5-6 mins) Its not as electronicly distorted as tool is, but theres no way in hell you can say they dont rock just as hard. So uhh, can you do that for me??

generally, i won't listen to anything that's not rock, and even more so... anything created before the 90's... with very few exceptions, metallica being the largest one...

i have a certain taste in music and i know where to look to find it... it's not back in the 80's or 70's, it's not in any genre then rock (or some extension of it) some call that close minded-ness... i just call it not wasting my fucking time when i know i'm not going to like the shit...

that'd be like going to one of those idiot pop singer's movies.. you know you don't like that person, you know you don't like what you've seen of it so far (previews) but you go anyways...

Great post Metaphor. Someone had to say it

Tool, Led Zeppelin, those classic rock bands, "mainstream" punk bands, for the most they're good bands, Tool is a great band, use to listen to them frequently when I was younger.

It's just when you start to limit yourself to these bands that you submit to the power of the mainstream. To a lesser degree, it's like watching MTV to influence your choice. Same with rap, electronica, and every genre.

Not everyone has the same tastes, but that's exactly why there so music out there. There's something for everyone. You have to do yourself a favor and start expanding your horizons. Out there are music that's just unbelieveable. It might not fit to your tastes, at first, but you have to give it a chance.

There's different ways to listen to music. There's music that immediately catches on, and there's music you have to listen to a few times to soak the complexity of the sound, to age like wine.

    To counter your quote slip

"that'd be like going to one of those idiot pop singer's movies.. you know you don't like that person, you know you don't like what you've seen of it so far (previews) but you go anyways..."

You can't always judge a book by it's cover. There is so many choices out there, but you can d/l everything for free these days, no one has an excuse to not go beyond their horizons. Perhaps one day you d/led a song that you didn't think much at first, but one day you're sitting back and the song hits you out of the blue. You wouldn't know if you didn't at least reach out for it. I'm aware of the bias within everyone that prevents them from expands their tastes because of preconceptions. You gotta battle it, because if I didn't, I'd still be thinking Kurt Cobain is the ONLY god.

You gotta check some of their b-sides, metaphor, it's pretty damn rockin'.
