Sounds like they got the rot, very likely an embolism caused it...
Was the soil sterile?
Just for ref, and embolism is when you make the final cut but you get air in the stem... it blocks the phloem and xylem... makes a place for fungus to attack... eventually the cutting will rot below the soil line.
Try using clonex or another gel instead, because the gels help protect your cuttings from this.
I very highly recommend this method:

It's the one I use and swear by. I've been getting 100% rooting and survival since I switched to it.

Cloning can be tricky the first couple time around.
the most common problem I had was Too much Water.
you want to be the line between soaked and Dry... So moist and nothing else.
I would try rapid rooters or Rockwell instead of plain Ol Soil. Less chance of them getting soaked and even if they do they can dry out really fast. You can even squeeze water out of them.
When I use rockwell or rooters. I leave the cube wet// stick my cutting in and from then on in when I need to water it I add water slowly to my try and let the rockwell Or rapid rooter soak it up on its own. when its odne soaking it up I stop pouring water into the tray and empty out the excess.
Good Luck
