Have they ever smoked? Maybe you should ask them to be honest with you about their reasons for not wanting you to smoke.
Okay and if not... there is a good book:
Amazon.com: A Primer of Drug Action: A Concise, Nontechnical Guide to the Actions, Uses, and Side Effects of Psychoactive Drugs (Primer of Drug Action: A Concise, ... to the Actions, Uses, & Side Effects of): Books: Robert M. Julien
It has technical language in it, so it is primarily for people with college-level science knowledge, but it is very good and very unbiased in its reporting. It lists both positive and negative medical consequences of drug use, and based on the information, you can make up your own mind. It was a real eye-opener for me and changed my mind about cannabis. I used to be anti-drug but once I saw the facts for myself, I was more open-minded about it, and eventually tried it for myself.
This book is about the history and social usage of cannabis:

Write a big, long, informative paper on cannabis. Make sure to include sources. Write it as if it was for a big school project. Should change their minds.

I'd wait about a year or two. It really helps if you keep your grades up for a while to make the point to your parents that smoking weed doesn't have a negative effect on your mind. Also research the topic a lot, bring up points like comparing it to tobacco and alcohol, which are both legal. Look up the tobacco vs weed cancer article on erowid and print that out.
Ask them if they remember slavery. We were a slave nation longer than we have been a free nation, but that doesn't make it right. It helps if your parents aren't gullible conservatives.I always ask my parents what they think about weed and all they can say is "it is illegal and the government knows whats best..."
But yeah dude, I say wait at least a year.
