It's a combination of a chemical and temperature burn. Someone had said it correctly earlier- the salt allows the ice to melt at a lower temperature, in addition to adjusting the salinity of your skin, making it more vulnerable to chemical changes.

What happens if you hold it for too long?? I just did it and my skin got really numb, and now there is a stinging pain on my wrist and a cool ice shaped lump.

What happens is the ice burns your skin and makes an indent into your arm. The square spot gets as hard as rock and you can't even feel it.

Then you get a whitish mark for a few hours on your arm, and it stays red for days...weeks, depends on how long you left it on, and how much pressure you were applying.
