Wow, I tried to write a response to this thread earlier but you hit the nail on the head.

I was DEFINITELY the ugly duckling when I was younger... I sort of earned my keep in my circle of friends by being the one with the biting wit... even a touch of self-deprecation... I had it all... braces, glasses, and a slight speech impediment, lol!!! Classic!!!!

Luckily with age all that shit went away (I still wear glasses, but finally found a frame style that has that sexy librarian thing going on) and the good humor stayed.

I think it's very true what the studies have shown about the compliments that a child receives influencing their learning/development... especially in girls... that a girl who is very pretty always hears how pretty she is, and focuses on BEING pretty, and a girl who is always complimented by her relatives for saying smart shit, or being hard working- whatever she sees as what people are impressed by will be a major force in developing her personality.

And a girl who has always been told how pretty she is... well, I'm glad I wasn't... I'm not hung up on my looks at ALL... and even though I am certainly not a skinny hot chick, I wear a size 12-14 but look solid rather than flabby, I have a pretty good body image. I guess I can thank my schoolteacher mother for pushing me to be a little smarty-pants rather than a pageant princess!
