The center of the flame is much hotter than is needed to activate the TCH. Holding the lighter a centimeter or so away should work just fine. A good way to know that you're doing it correctly is when you are able to really taste and smell the special components of the strain (I.E. you can taste/smell citrus). Again, this really doesn't apply to your every-day weed.

so that's how you "taste" weed.

I usually only feel spicy, smooth, or kinda pillow-like soft in my throat when i'm taking the hit depending on the weed.
