Thanks, Breuk! Yes, FamilyTree DNA was the one I requested the swab kit from. It should arrive any day now. My husband and his friends think people ought to wait another, oh, 10 or 15 years before doing this because the DNA databases they test people against aren't yet fully complete. They think that in another decade or so, the comparison information and detailed DNA databases will be so much more thorough that these early tests will have been a waste compared to what we can find out later. Eventually, I've read, they'll be able to determine people's DNA heritage to such a level of detail that they'll almost be able to tell us precisely what area of, say, northern Europe we hailed from, or what area in Africa. This fascinates me. I've been on fire to look more deeply into all this since watching the series "African-American Lives" on PBS last summer. I have a $20 bet with my father that I'll have at least 3% African-American heritage, and he's betting it's going to be 100% Indo-European.
