How many times do I have to say it... just because you call your kid Jesus, it does not make him the Messiah.

I say it from experience.

If it doesn't exist, what strains was I smoking, and why were they all so consistent?
Like Jesus, just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Because the so-called Purple Haze going around now was released by one specific breeding outfit.
Damn, let me go into my genetics collection and see what I've got... How's about a 4-way double Haze cross, and a Purple Star male who I keep around just to laugh at him... Give me a couple generations and I will supply you with a product that tastes similar to, but isn't quite, tea... I mean, Haze (any Douglas Adams fans out there, lol?)... and is purple to boot. And yes, it will be mediocre, and look like a sativa, because Purple Star sucks, and both have sativa heritage.
-DISCLAIMER- I am not giving out any seeds so don't ask! This is hypothetical!!!
Anyway... only one breeder seems to have been dodgy enough to want to capitalize on the STUPID purple haze buzzword. That's why what you got was so consistent.
It's easy enough to breed purple buds into a haze line, but why on EARTH would you bother, unless -OMG!!! Could it be?- you are just out to score a bunch of dough?

But since it's a mediocre strain at best, why bother.

I'm not defending the seed companies.
I'm just saying that when you can get 'purple haze' seeds from 3 different companies, that all grow the same phenotype, it's hard for me to accept the idea that the strain doesn't exist.
I do agree that only a noob would waste time growing a strain just for it's name, especially when it's a known dud.

You do not understand what I am saying. You can breed a strain and name it anything you like. It exists. But its relation to the name is a creation of the breeder. As the relation of a pipe to the word "pipe" is simply a creation of language. A Ford falcon is not a REAL falcon, it is a car with a name. Purple haze the new version was named after a song and/or a strain that may or may not ever have once existed.

Knockoff artist finds new strain du jour... the cycle is perpetuated.
So as long as we are all here yapping about the merits of this BS purple haze, the buzz continues, and these fools still get their money.
Real breeders breed for a plant's merits, not for a name.

I agree wholeheartedly that breeding should never be about creating a name. It should always be about creating a more potent and/or more stable strain.
We can say it doesn't exist all day long, but at the END of the day, purple haze seeds will still be available.
I believe we should accept the fact that this strain exists, so we can warn people that it sucks.
As you say, there will always be breeders who are motivated by profit, so let's deal with that as a community by some other means than denial.

Seeds CALLED purple haze exist.
I'm not denying a thing. I agree that we need to warn everyone about it.
Go forth and preach, brother.
