Educated guesses please

I'll be upgrading my lighting and am wondering if a 250 watt hps would create too much heat in a 5'x5' room with a fan and about 4 plants.

Hard to say...you would need adequate ventilation but as long as you could swing that, light would be a lot less trouble than several small CFL's.
