Skiers/Snowboarders Unite!
Who here snowboard or ski?
I'm going to ski with friends on a weekend gateaway to the Cannan Valley/Timberline region in WV. It isn't Colorado or Utah, but I'm psyched. Were staying in this gorgeous cabin, with a nice lounge with a fireplace and a hot tub. It's gonna be sweet, with some night skiing, which I only did once. Smoking a few blunts going down the hill. I can't wait.......AHHHHHH. Tomorrow never comes.thcbongman Reviewed by thcbongman on . Skiers/Snowboarders Unite! Who here snowboard or ski? Another skier checking in!
I used to date this dude who was on ski patrol at some cheesy little local 'mountain'. They all chip in on a keg and then get the guy in the groomer cat to take it up to the summit for them and then they'd bury it in the snow in the woods for future enjoyment.
I love the whole skiing lifestyle... too bad I'm poor now that I have a house... =(
My favorite mountain is Wildcat in NH- still owned by the US forest service and feels like stepping back in time to the 50s- gnarly REAL New England skiing, steep narrow trails, minimally groomed, awesome views.
Then Okemo comes in a close 2nd for their AWESOME snowmaking/grooming ( I love early-season skiing best of all) and really well-laid out trails and terrain parks.

We were stuck on the side of a windy, typical West Virginia road. The whole town must've stopped by to either offer help or just to stare and laugh, including one notable hick family in a old broken-down station wagon asking if we needed to use their celluar phone, and one teenager debating whether he should stay with us until the tow truck comes. Even the cops paid us a visit. What a way to start out a ski trip. Gotta love the people in WV.
The first place I went to was Timberline. Narrow trails that were groomed, but all trails merged into a slow ski area and there were a lot of people. It's like playing pinball to avoid them all. I made my only fall of the trip to avoid some guy who hogged the hill, and through that, my binding popped. It wasn't fun skiing where I couldn't let go.
The next day I went to Caanan Valley, I almost didn't ski because of the disappointment of Timberline. But I'm glad I did, this place reminded me of why I love skiing. There was a mixture of wide, groomed trails, narrow forest scenic trails and nice off-course powder skiing. Not to mention the amazing view of the valley. Most of all, it wasn't crowded, the lines were short, and at most one or two others in the black diamonds! They had a terrain park with rails, jumps of all kinds, even going off a car. That was really beast. It was reminesent of the type of skiing in the Alps, albeit smaller, but to even find a place this good 3 hours away from my house in the mid-atlantic is quite a coup. I didn't want to go homeI was having too good of a time, but I guess all good things have to come to an end.

Wildcat is one of the more uncrowded mountains in the area. I would also suggest Jay Peak for a pretty gnarly New England experience. That mountain is in north-central VT right on the Canada line.
HEy if ya make it up here give me a shout in local. I'll lay some tracks with ya. But not at stupid killington, lol!

I am! I used to go on skiing trips with my family all the time when I was younger, to Keystone, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs in Colorado... SO beautiful. But now my parents are too old and lazy to go anymore, but this winter I've been taking snowboarding lessons for a gym credit for college, but it's SO MUCH harder than skiing, my ass and knees have never been so bruised... this Friday we have a 'free' day with no lessons, I'm thinking I'm going to give up the board and go back to skiing. But maybe the reason I sucked at boarding was because I showed up stoned for every lesson.......
Any thoughts on skiing vs. boarding for those of you who have actually tried both?

I enjoy skiing much more, on my beautiful 210s. I don't understand the trend in the last 10 years of skiing on shorter skis, the typical height now 170-180 are what I used when I was 11 and beginning to ski.

Ow snowboarding hurts my ass. NEVER AGAIN!!!
I am all about the planks. But I like the little stubby ones for backcountry skiing. I have 3 pairs of skis... my short, wide 'rock skis' that I took with me to Alaska along with a pair of snowshoes, some longer, less shaped Fischers that I bring when I know the trails are going to be well-groomed, and an inbetween pair of MadTrix for pretty much the rest of the time.
Yeah killington is MAD touristy and the thing that makes me maddest is that to keep up with keeping snow onthe trails, they make snow DURING THE DAY on open trails! It's like a 20 degree car wash.
No thanx.
Okemo is much more considerate IMO. They avoid blowing snow during the day, and never on open trails.
