Here's a quick demo of a style of Kif-making using a kif box. We will be using hydroponically grown Grapefruit from femaleseeds.nl that has been cured for about a month, a kif box, and a pollen press to make hash with (when it arrives in the mail). There are many forms of Hash, the purest form is pressed kif.


This is a common kif box. It is essentially a box containing a screen in it and a collection area usually made of glass or plexiglass. This one has a 100 gauge stainless steel screen and a mirror collection area.

The word "kief" appears to come from an Arabic word (classical Arabic form kaif كيف) meaning "pleasure, well being."

Kief, Kef, Keef or kif refers to the dried resin glands (or trichomes) of cannabis which accumulate on containers or have been removed with a kiefing screen or sieve. Kief is a rare item among consumers of cannabis, and is prized because of its extremely high THC content. A small amount of kief is typically placed on top of cannabis when loaded in a smoking pipe or bong and requires great cornering technique to avoid burning all of it at once. Kief can also be smoked on its own or vaporized for inhalation.

These are some bud shots of what we will be making kif with. It is a sativa strain that is 75% C'99, and 25% "fruity sativa".

Click on the picture of the bud above, you'll see all those crystals that we are going to harvest from the bud using the kif box. This kif box isn't very big but it's perfect size for personal use. THe box is about the size of a US dollar bill, you can also see the zippo lighter for size comparison in the above picture. The bud is about 2 grams in weight.


Next we're going to start gently rubbing the cured bud on the screen where the trichomes will fall through and collect on the mirror below it. I like to break up the bud to expose more trichomes to allow them to fall through the screen more easily and quickly.

There is a "rule" about kif and how you make it. THe more you sift it through the screen, the more vegetative matter will fall through and not neccesarily just trichomes. Some hash and kif is actually graded for this in some parts of the world. THe less vegetative matter, the better the kif.

After rubbing the bud and shaking it around a bit on the screen, you can check out the bottom collection area and look for kif that has collected on the mirror

above would be the first sift and the most potent and pure kif you can get. It is up to you how much more you want to sift your buds. For the sake of this thread, I will sift a little more to show you the results, the final product, and the left over bud that can be used for other things.

I have sifted the bud as much as I would like now. You can see how the bud has broken up. I use a light rubbing motion on the screen and I shake the box a bit helping the trichomes to fall through. There is quite a lot of "shake" left on top of the screen. Most of the trichomes have been removed from it. You can do a lot with this "by-product". If you started off with very potent herb, chances are this leftover is still pretty potent and can smoked, or added to food, or whatever you like. It makes a very nice joint or blunt with friends. The stuff on the bottom is what we're after though.

Time to harvest the kif. I will push all that golden powder on the mirror to one corner so that we can collect it.

The kif is now ready to be used to make hash, or smoked as is. You can sprinkle a little bit in a joint or in a bowl or bong, or use a screen and smoke it alone. It is very potent stuff, and a little goes a long way. The first time I smoked kif it was by itself and I treated it like a regular bowl of good pot. I smoked two or three hits and I was completely ZONKED.

I am waiting for my pollen press to arrive in the mail from a head shop. When it arrives I will be putting the kif into it and pressing it to make hash with. Stay tuned......
