your right about that, but would you really put big in the same category as all the other mainstream rappers? it doesnt even matter if he was mainstream because he was mainstream because he was great, and rapped about real shit instead of the shit we have now. about chains hanging low and popping your collar and snapping your fingers, and the worst of all, BALLIN! fuck that!

I don't understand people here and their "mainstream this, mainstream that"...when you say that, you're being so ridiculously unspecific. Most hip hop music doesn't fall into the category of mainstream.

And if you think BIG was mainstream, you're fucking nuts. He was/is well known, because he brought a new style to music, so of course he was popular and liked by the public. Go listen to "Gimme The Loot" and "10 Crack Commandments" and tell me if that's mainstream LOL..

"Juicy" I guess you could say is more on the "mainstream" side of things, but it's one of the greatest songs in music history, so who gives a fuck what it is. They still play it today...13 years later...amazing. And "Hypnotize" as well...but again...good song, so who cares. Besides these two songs, there is nothing mainstream about the Notorious one...those are really the only two songs that actually COULD be played on the radio due to his lyrical content and use of 'bad words'.

I don't even know what people mean by "mainstream". Wtf are you referring to? Justin Timberlake? 50 Cent? Neyo? Are you mainstream if you have a music video? If you have an album? I don't know what the classification is...but if they music is good...it doesn't matter to me. You're being naive to say you don't like music just because you think it's "mainstream"...

Edit: CC, you're entitled to your opinion, but his first album is deemed one of the greatest in music history (not just hip hop).

    very well said!
i cant define mainstream rap because its really just a matter of how i percieve someones music. but as a general rule of thumb i consider mainstream all the lil's, young/yung's, stuff like that. in other words, the shit of musc.

LOL...Yeah if that's the kind of "mainstream" hip hop people are talking about...then I agree. Then again, I don't consider a lot of that hip hop anyway. It's shit music like you said. Crunk music is not hip hop...and anything like it is not either...anything with a stupid dance or gimmick is not hip hop either.

I determine mainstream rap by is it bubblegum rap, if it isn't it's not mainstream, it just gets played cause it is a good single or whatever...You can't say these guys are mainstream because they have videos out, or had songs played on the radio everywhere, mainstream rap is basically that laffy taffy, chicken noodle soup bubblegum bullshit.....And i am not hating on the south, i like a lot of southern rappers like project pat, Scarface, the reall down south mans, not these new bubblegummers like D4L and these guys who just get to make it cause they have a catchy beat and dumbed down enough lyrics even a 3 year old could understand what is being said...............A lot of hardcore, straight to the point lyricists won't even see their actual talent get rewarded with money, record sales, and spins on the radio.......think of papoose, styles p, jadakiss, sheek louch, saigon, immortal technique, 40 Cal, and a lot of others with unbelievable street fame, but no plaques to show for it.........except for jada cause he went plat, but he probably won't come with another mainstream-friendly single like why? again.........
