    Cannabis or Marijuana?

Well I'm glad you have a hobby, even if it IS telling the world how smart you are...
Perhaps you should make yourself a sandwich-board to wear on city street corners like the slightly disturbed born-agains who stand and yell the same thing all day...

"I am smart!!!! You are a/an [moron, dummy, idiot, etc.]!!! The end is near!!!! Repent all those who are not as well-read as me!!!

I personally can't give two shits how often you say marijuana.
It's your lame attempts at belittling others that tires me.

    Cannabis or Marijuana?

About 9 seconds worth of research later...
    From Wikipedia:

The name marijuana (Mexican Spanish marihuana, mariguana) is associated almost exclusively with the plant's psychoactive use. The term is now well known in English largely due to the efforts of American drug prohibitionists during the 1920s and 1930s, which deliberately used a Mexican name for cannabis in order to turn the populace against the idea that it should be legal, playing upon attitudes towards race. (See 1937 Marihuana Tax Act). Those who demonized the drug by calling it marihuana omitted the fact that the "deadly marihuana" was identical to cannabis indica, which had at the time a reputation for pharmaceutical safety.[49]

Your source also spelled it "marihuana" - which is the "bad" way. That is not the spelling that we used, and is still used: MARIJUANA.

Wikpedia is not an authority on this.

NORM does not use "Cannabis" - they use the "M" word.

    Cannabis or Marijuana?

???? it's the same word you oblivious moron

"Marihuana" was the spelling most commonly used in Federal Government documents at the time. In keeping with prior law, it is still spelled "Marihuana" in some congressional bills such as HR 3037, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2005.

The spelling is not the issue it is the use of the word itself.

The word marijuana entered the lexicon via racist motives. The word has most likely moved past the original stigma it was saddled with, but it none the less originated in this manner. Also... you really are a giant dick

You aren't different. Just another one of the millions of dicks in the world. Also LIP just gave his opinion, and you flamed him. But, I do prefer the word cannabis when I want to sound "professional" and I say bud when refering to what I am about to smoke.

Not to be outright offensive, but BA, you do tend to come off as a bit pretentious. LIP gives good advice without demeaning people in their tracks....

You might want to be a bit more welcome to new ideas and opinions.

And as an addition, yeah, people still do use "nigger," well, "nigga" both black and white. Even to each others faces, if used in a familiar and comfortable manner, it can be a term of endearment.

I prefer Cannabis. Or herb. Marijuana just is... Eh. Almost like a pathetic joke gone wrong.

    Cannabis or Marijuana?

I work at a truck stop after school, and people come in there and say they need fuel for their "reefer". This threw me off for so long, and so I asked one day and apparently it means Refrigerator. Who would've known.

On the contrary, I think that the word "Cannabis" is a bit pretentious.

Those people that have been involved with it for a long time understand - like NORML, the Million Marijuana March movement, etc. The kids on this board will get it someday, maybe. The next generation will have a new word, to replace Cannabis - or they'll go back to the term Marijuana.

Cannabis is still relatively unused as a term for weed, outside of this board - in the U.S. at least.

    Cannabis or Marijuana?

It's the original Latin name for it... How is that pretentious?

I use medical cannabis. When people say Marijuana, it tends to be not taken seriously; much more of a joke term than something offensive.

The reason that you have "medical cannabis" is partially due to the efforts of the organizations, groups, doctors and individuals that have been working for years on changing the laws and raising public awareness. Just about all of them, especially the organizations, have used the word Marijuana - at least from my perspective.

I doubt that they would have been more successful with "Cannabis". It's too confusing and, on top of everything else, weâ??ve now got the "Hemp" marketing and research. Although this fiber does not contain THC, people have been generally associating it with Marijuana.

Call it whatever you want, but just don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
