Cannabis or Marijuana?

I'm not a big fan of calling it marihuana/marijuana, if only because that word was popularized by Harry Anslinger in his attempts to get it associated with the Mexicans, who he clearly viewed as inferior beings.

...... "Cannabis" is a very old word whose origins can be traced back to the ancient Scythian language. ...... In fact, the English word "canvas" also comes from the word "cannabis", because it used to be that all canvases were made out of cannabis.

BTW I call it cannabis because that's what Carl Linnaeus classified it as... my garden plants have their Latin names on their tags... why should the sacred Herb be any different? For example, my Afghans are "Cannabis indica L. var. "Afghani Dream".

Hereâ??s some more information, but I canâ??t vouch for historical accuracy. I believe that the word pre-dates Anslingerâ??s use of it in the mid-1930's.




The origin of the word marijuana is unclear. One scholar suggests it derives from mariguango, Portuguese for "intoxicant". Another scholar thinks it came from "Maria y Juana", Mexican slang for soldiers and whores in the era of Pancho Villa.


Another claimed it originated from the name of a brand of cheap Mexican cigarettes which bore a picture of a young girl (Marijuana = "Mary-Jane") on the packet.

Whatever its origin, marijuana is the word by which Americans have come to know Cannabis sativa, which most of the world calls "Indian hemp".

The mexican slang word Marijuana, also spelt Marihuana was unknown to most americans until newspaper headlines first introduced its name in the 1920s.

On the contrary, I think that the word "Cannabis" is a bit pretentious.

Those people that have been involved with it for a long time understand - like NORML, the Million Marijuana March movement, etc. The kids on this board will get it someday, maybe. The next generation will have a new word, to replace Cannabis - or they'll go back to the term Marijuana.

Cannabis is still relatively unused as a term for weed, outside of this board - in the U.S. at least.

Cannabis was also the term used to classify in the U.S. Pharmacopeia until the 1930s when they wanted to make it illegal to clear the way for synthetics. Cannabis was the word that the American public was familiar with on any level. Well it would be pretty hard to demonize a substance that people were already familiar with right?

However, the first state law outlawing marijuana did so not because of Mexicans using the drug. Oddly enough, it was because of Mormons using it. Mormons who traveled to Mexico in 1910 came back to Salt Lake City with marijuana. The church was not pleased and ruled against use of the drug. Since the state of Utah automatically enshrined church doctrine into law, the first state marijuana prohibition was established in 1915. (Today, Senator Orrin Hatch serves as the prohibition arm of this heavily church-influenced state.)
Other states quickly followed suit with marijuana prohibition laws, including Wyoming (1915), Texas (1919), Iowa (1923), Nevada (1923), Oregon (1923), Washington (1923), Arkansas (1923), and Nebraska (1927). These laws tended to be specifically targeted against the Mexican-American population.

Where did I say I have a problem with the word? I don't, and use it myself on occasion. And the main reason I think groups like NORML use it is because it is the most widely known term.
