Cannabis or Marijuana?
Very nice and useful lesson on the etymology of cannabis! And good backup of LIP's original hunch.

Hereā??s some more information, but I canā??t vouch for historical accuracy. I believe that the word pre-dates Anslingerā??s use of it in the mid-1930's.
The origin of the word marijuana is unclear. One scholar suggests it derives from mariguango, Portuguese for "intoxicant". Another scholar thinks it came from "Maria y Juana", Mexican slang for soldiers and whores in the era of Pancho Villa.
Another claimed it originated from the name of a brand of cheap Mexican cigarettes which bore a picture of a young girl (Marijuana = "Mary-Jane") on the packet.
Whatever its origin, marijuana is the word by which Americans have come to know Cannabis sativa, which most of the world calls "Indian hemp".
The mexican slang word Marijuana, also spelt Marihuana was unknown to most americans until newspaper headlines first introduced its name in the 1920s.

I like to use the word "weed" too. I like that one a lot. Don't like "grass" that much.

Cannabis was the word that the American public was familiar with on any level. Well it would be pretty hard to demonize a substance that people were already familiar with right?
Marijuana was the term used by Harry Anslinger, a man who was openly racist about Mexican immigrants and Black people. He used this word to associate Cannabis with the workers, who were generally considered dirty savages that threatened the American way of life. The word Marijuana in itself is not racist, but it's intent and application SURELY are. And there is absolutely nothing pretentious about the word Cannabis, sorry bro but you are wrong.

it sounds great when people say "lets smoke some BUD"
anyone who says pot,or cannabis, wacky tobacky, is too weird for meLove is patient and kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres

Listen, I think that the following organizations are very qualified, very "serious", and use the term Marijuana:

If you have a problem with them as well, then so be it.
BTW, Harry J. Anslinger wasn't the first to go against Marijuana: A very good ā??drug warā? site: Why is Marijuana Illegal?
However, the first state law outlawing marijuana did so not because of Mexicans using the drug. Oddly enough, it was because of Mormons using it. Mormons who traveled to Mexico in 1910 came back to Salt Lake City with marijuana. The church was not pleased and ruled against use of the drug. Since the state of Utah automatically enshrined church doctrine into law, the first state marijuana prohibition was established in 1915. (Today, Senator Orrin Hatch serves as the prohibition arm of this heavily church-influenced state.)
Other states quickly followed suit with marijuana prohibition laws, including Wyoming (1915), Texas (1919), Iowa (1923), Nevada (1923), Oregon (1923), Washington (1923), Arkansas (1923), and Nebraska (1927). These laws tended to be specifically targeted against the Mexican-American population.
When Montana outlawed marijuana in 1927, the Butte Montana Standard reported a legislator's comment: "When some beet field peon takes a few traces of this stuff... he thinks he has just been elected president of Mexico, so he starts out to execute all his political enemies." In Texas, a senator said on the floor of the Senate: "All Mexicans are crazy, and this stuff [marijuana] is what makes them crazy."

Where did I say I have a problem with the word? I don't, and use it myself on occasion. And the main reason I think groups like NORML use it is because it is the most widely known term.
