Cannabis or Marijuana?

I don't have medicinal cannabis because it'e legal. It's illegal in my state. I grow it myself. I appreciate those who fought for others rights, but in all respect, what the hell does that have to do with the etymology of the word? I'm sure they all have THEIR own preference of using the word, so what is your point?

It's illegal mostly everywhere, but I'm sure that we can agree that many people get away with small amounts for personal use - medical or otherwise.

The whole argument about the word Marijuana being "racist", and otherwise derogatory, is bullshit. That's my point.

I'm not a big fan of calling it marihuana/marijuana, if only because that word was popularized by Harry Anslinger in his attempts to get it associated with the Mexicans, who he clearly viewed as inferior beings.

I like the word "cannabis", and I regret that it is not very familiar to English speakers (it is widely used in other languages though like French and German). "Cannabis" is a very old word whose origins can be traced back to the ancient Scythian language. It was borrowed into the Proto-Indo-European language, which would later develop into most of the modern languages between Iceland and Bangladesh (excluding the Arab and Turkic peoples and a couple others). From the Proto-Indo-European word which probably sounded like "kanab" we get the Greek word "kannabis", the Latin word "cannabis", the Spanish word "cáñamo", the French word "chanvre", the English word "hemp", the Dutch word "hennep", the German word "Hanf", the Russian word "konoplya", the Persian word "kanab", and a whole bunch more. In fact, the English word "canvas" also comes from the word "cannabis", because it used to be that all canvases were made out of cannabis.
