Its not like Vista was announced far in advance, and its not like they were given the specifications for Vista so that they could code the drivers and software updates ahead of time...
As far as the SP1 beta test, they do it because it makes everyone happy. People who want to get the updates before everyone else can get it, and in return for getting access to it early, MS is able to beta test it on a large scale audience, because honestly it doesnt matter how great your in house QA people are, you will miss things that will be found when you have a large amount of people all screwing with the software. You have to purposely seek out the update, because it is beta it isnt pushed to anyone who doesnt want it.

At least they seem to have learned something from the XP fiasco, to lock the OS tight.

Vista had alot better start then XP, and is alot better OS then XP. I dreaded the switch to XP from 2000, it was going from a solid OS to a peice of crap, and it wasnt until just after SP1 that XP was actually stable enough and worked well enough that it was worthwhile using. Until that point, it was like a rehash of ME.
I literally had to save a batch file that ran all the scripts to change the configuration of XP on a new install becuase it took too long to do manually, and I reinstall every 3-4 months to keep things squeaky clean.
