I keep the door closed because of the smell, my kids, and the cat. I don't really have to keep it closed. I just prefer it that way. Also, the closet is near a window, and with the hps on, it looks like God is standing in my closet. I tacked up a dark purple blanket over the window though, so that helps.

Thanks for the info on humidity. I was getting worried. It seemed so desert-like in there, all dry and windy. Which is why it's perfect for drying lingerie.
