well, james brown didn't actually write the song, but he could have meant that by covering it. Wild cherry wrote it and I doubt there was double meaning.

"Okay, serious question. Lately I've been really going through a hard time in my life with realizing who I am and just stuff like that (normal teenage bullshit) but lately, I've been using pot to help me find the answers. I feel better, and I feel like I have found the path. My question is, did anybody else use pot to help them get through their problems? And I don't mean use pot an escape, but used pot to get answers?"

awesome question. you separated that people smoke during problems for different reasons, 1 to escape and 2 to analyze and conclude. I've always resented having herb in common with people from the first category. It gives pot a bad rep, when in reality it is the person who is predisposed to binge to medicate the problem and postpone resolutions.
On the other hand, herb is a useful tool to see yourself and your problem from a detached, sometimes abstract perspective, and to penetrate the emotional barrier that exists between you and your answer.
I personally never puff when I'm upset. I let the irrational thoughts dissipate, then smoke when I'm calm again.
